I see there are some posters here who know India well, so perhaps you could clear this up for me: Why does one always hear references to "The Punjab" rather than just "Punjab"? Does the word have a meaning? And what is the region like in comparison to the rest of India? Thanks!

I don't know India at all, but since no-one else has answered:
I believe "Punjab" means "Five rivers". As for the definite article, you might as well ask why "The Bronx" or "The Cotswolds".
