Garrett Morris sucks in this show. It's weird they kept him for so long

It makes me wonder if he was playing the race card. His acting sucks and he speaks worse than Magic Johnson and Bill Cosby. DERH DERH DUH DERH DERH DERH!!!!!
I'm trying to watch all these on Hulu and getting sick of the MF. I have 2 more seasons to go before they finally retire his character.

I know, he was irritating and always spoke in a sing song, look-at-me-I'm-streetwise manner. He was a poor man's "Angel Martin" for Cannell.

reply

Who's Angel Martin?

Sporty James' role was that of a street informant and he did it so well. Hunter like Crockett and Tubbs on Miami Vice, wouldn't have even solved a lot of their cases if it weren't for Sporty (Hunter) or Izzy Moreno (Miami Vice). Part of the reason why Hunter was a hit was because of Sporty's street smarts. Guess you didn't think of that or realize that huh?

Plus the man spent most of his time on the series around hookers, serious thugs, cops, etc. and it was street talk he was talking. You two would know that if you knew anything about street life.

And he wasn't speaking in no DERH and DUH language. He was trying to make a point or get out of a seedy situation, which was called stammering or thinking of something else to say to save his butt.

1st of all, I'm aware of the type of character Sporty was written for. Obviously I do not agree with your opinion that "He did it so well." I don't believe Mr. Morris the comedian ever should have been cast for that part to begin with. My opinion is the show was a hit because of the two main characters. But hey, if you want to be the Shorty fan club from the old Hunter TV show from the 80's then more power to you.

"he wasn't speaking in no DERH and DUH"

That means he was because you put "no" in there.

Angel Martin was Rockford's old prison buddy on The Rockford Files, a 'reformed' con artist who roped Rockford into any number of outrageous schemes.

I think it's a prerequisite to have an informant on a cop show that usually acts as comic relief. And I thought Sporty was fine, I love how Hunter and McCall just trusted this obviously shady character implicitly lol

reply

In my opinion, the Bernie character makes Sporty look like Olivier.

reply

Indeed, you're right. Another thing I liked best about Sporty was how Hunter and McCall treated him like a close friend. This is unlike other examples of police informants, in which they're usually treated with disdain.
