Saddest Episode

My wife and I agree on this one. "Wally", from Season 3, with Dick Van Dyke playing the homeless puppeteer.

What a sad episode ! He gives such a moving performance, as all of the people around him die, and then eventually, he dies, himself.

God there's so many episodes I found sad and that made me cry, even as a 30 year old male who normally is pretty emotionless and cold.
One episode of the top of my head is the one that featured Willy Waver, totally balled my eyes out at the end, but to be honest most episodes ended up bringing a tear to the eye, I remember even as a kid watching my dad ball his eyes out.

reply

Agree with the Wally episode.
When he says, "You've touched the face of God" I get chills every time.
Dick Van Dyke was great in this one.

reply

I wouldn't call this a 'sad' episode. Bittersweet would be the adjective I'd use.

reply

That one is a major tearjerker. Dick Van Dyke's best work IMO

I remember several sad episodes, I never knew the episode names though as I was very young then.

But two that stand out as very sad, are: In 1 a man who is feeling guilty wishes to be God for 1 day (?), and wishes to fix everything that was is fault in a tragedy. And to his horror, discovers that what he ultimately wanted did not come to pass, as this was NOT a guilt of his. That was a tearjerker for sure.

Another sad one was when the mentally challenged teen is beaten by his father, and runs away with Thomas, his cat. And he almost dies trying to save the cat, and trying to put out the fire.
The scenes between him and his father, and he and Johnathan were tear-worthy big time!

Does anyone know the names of these episodes?? And what seasons they were in? I'd love to try and find them to rent on Netflix.

"I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus."
"Didn't he discover America?"
"Penfold, shush."

reply

I agree about the one with the boy and the cat. To this day, that is the episode that stands out the most in my memory.

Fiatlux-1, the episodes you are referring to are the Season 2 episodes "Heaven on Earth" and "Alone"

Responding to a 5 year old post here...

The first episode you mention was "Heaven On Earth" and it was Victor French who played the guy you wrote baout.

He thought being God for a day would right all the wrongs that had happened around him lately and what he believed was all because of him. When he attempted to put things right, things just got worse in other ways. The message of the episode was things happen for a reason and often happen so even more terrible things do not happen.

Victor French played Mark Gordon, the other star on the show. He also played on "Gunsmoke" and "Little House On The Prairie" with Michael Landon. They were both great actors.

it was called ALONE very sad one but with a happy ending starred john fraklin as arine the homeless boy

reply

Agree, boy and the cat. When he is celebrating the cat's birthday. So sad. Happy ending! :)

reply

wow I didnt know it moved you guys that much!

reply

I always thought "We Have Forever" was the saddest. Second place would go to the episode about the ghost dog that saved his family when they have auto accident.

Loved that Dave Rose score too.

reply

The one that stands out for me is the episode where Mark helps a little girl find her mother at a fair, only to drive up on the family car crashed later to see the little girl has been killed.

reply

That's "Heaven On Earth", which another user mentioned as well. It was a sad episode, but had a good message for people who live with guilt and sadness that Mark (Victor French's character) felt.

reply

I think the saddest or at least the most moving was ep 3, To Touch the Moon, when the small boy spends his last moments on earth, knowing he is going beyond. You'd have to be pretty hard hearted not to feel something there...

reply

Season 2 Heaven On Earth STILL makes me ball. Especially, when Mark is looking over the little girls grave. Pleading with God to bring her back to life. I am 34 years old. And, I remember seeing this one as a kid. And, since then. With my mother dying of an overdose of drugs. And, understanding the guilt that Mark had to that level. I cry harder now.

Wall from Season 3 with Dick Van Dyke is another good one. I have to agree with a previous poster. That this has to be Dick Van Dyke at his best. Especially the scene where his friend is shot, and killed in a liquor store. When, he holds her and says "Know I lay me down to sleep. I pray the lord my sould to keep." And, then she dies. Aparently, this was only done in one take. Because, it was so moving. Landon didn't want to do a retake for fear it would totally change that moment when it was already perfect.

It is so sad that we live in a world where people want to use Television. Not, as a way to send a message of emotion, or hope. But, to watch the so called reality TV to see peoples dirty laundry just being aired. We will more then likely never see Landons like again in TV history. I think today if someone like Landon pitched Highway to the execs. He would be laughed out of the board room within seconds. I think we need shows like Highway on the air. To make us remember that we are human, and that sometimes it is ok to feel emotion, and to cry at things that make us feel.

I just want to say that I'm so sorry for your loss and God bless

It touched me so much that the boy wanted his friend and his mom not to be alone and to be together. This reminds me so much like what my son would be like God forbid, if he were dying. He and I are super close and he has said just like the boy Arthur, that he will always be with me, and I with him even when we pass away.

reply

The episode that absolutely tears me up no matter how many times I watch it is "For the Love of Larry" from season 3 (1986) where the dog saves his family. I was so caught up in the story that the ending had me bawling my eyes out.

reply

Yeah, it does suck that the dog actually was killed and only his ghost was guiding Jonathan & Mark around.

reply

Just watched an episode from season 2 called To Bind The Wounds about a father wanting the town he lives in to remember his son who died in Vietnam, it turns out the son had helped out many of the townsfolk without them realising and a trustfund is set up in the son's memory.

While that would have been a happy ending the father then passes away but not before flying off to heaven and be reuinited with his son...it's an incredibly moving ending and you will definitely shed a tear like I did!

reply

I didn't know it at the time, but the episode where Paul Walker plays the mentally challenged kid that is given a blue hat by the paraplegic lawyer to wear in his race...I tear up everytime Walker is about to win but because his hat comes off he turns around to get it.

Wayne Enterprises buys and sells companies like Stark Industries

The epasode where Mark was married for a few weeks to that lady who died. I got misty with that one. The epasode where the dog dies. Do they show it? Or do they just show the crashing sound?

reply

I thought the episode where Mark helps his wealthy friend reconnect with his son before his death was very sad.

reply

I agree the show where his son tries to impresss his rich father only to learn that his dad has cancer. I cried my eyes out on this one. This was the episode that made me love HTH. I am 36 years old and love watching Hart to Hart type shows. The 70's and 80's had the best shows.

reply

Thanks for the spoiler warning Texas!

reply

For the Love of Larry *just* ended on Cozi TV at this very moment. I had to change the channel, and not watch it, because I knew the ending. I was already crying a few minutes in. Even now, just thinking about it, I am choking up. Yes, there are many episode that have me crying at the end, but this one REALLY hits me hard. I know the dog didn't *really* die, but still...
