I bought Season 1.1 today!

Everywhere I've read, 'Season 1.1' was supposed to drop on July 21st, but for some reason Wal-Mart had it out tonight [$19.99]. I figured maybe it was a mistake and probably wouldn't be in the system when I got up there but it was.

I only put in the 1st & 4th DVDs so far but here's a brief run down.

It comes with a sheet of glossy rub on tattoos [Joe logo, Cobra logo and the Arashikage mark], a sheet promoting various tie-in products for the upcoming live-action film and an episode guide.

The 4 DVDs come in two slim [Very slim] clear plastic cases, one with the Joes on it and the other with Cobra on it.

On the 1st DVD is an interview with Ron Friedman [Part 1 of 3, with one on each of the first 3 discs] and on the 4th disc are a handful of the original commercials for the 82/83 line [Off the top of my head I recall the Polar Battle Bear commercial]. The kid's faces are blurred out, likely for legal reasons. There are also a handful of the original PSAs, maybe 6 or so, as well as the 1963 Toy Fare presentation [Haven't watched it yet] and a printable script for "Jungle trap". I watched the first Friedman interview. Not dissimmilar to the ones on the "A Real American Hero/Revenge of Cobra" set from a few years ago, but still interesting.

The cartoons themselves all have the appropriate openings and the commercial bumpers "G.I. Joe will return after these messages" "Now, back to G.I. Joe" are in all of the episodes so it plays as it did when broadcast. There's no closed captioning on the DVDs, but I didn't try using my TV's to see if that worked.

Picture and sound quality are good, but I don't have the Rhino release for comparison.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head. I haven't looked for any Easter eggs or anything.

If anyone else finds this before July 21st please post here, maybe it's dropping earlier than originally planned.

TVshowsondvd had reported on the change for the release date.

I wanted to buy this, but only the complete series footlocker set has interviews with the cast (which isn't fair to those who can't drop $145).

Nice to know it has an episode guide. And the ORIGINAL not parodied over PSAs

Cool thanks for clearing that up. Wonder why the change?

Yeah that would've been nice to buy the series all at once, especially since it's the later episodes which haven't hit DVD before and I haven't seen them in a long time, but it's easier to drop $20 every few months and be patient than to pony up $150.

The cast interviews would be neat, but I figure how often am I going to watch that?

Looks like they're spreading things over the various sets. There were about 4-5 commercials, all from the 82-83 era Joes, and about 6 or so PSAs, so each set should have about the same number I would guess.

yeah you're right.......it does suck for those who can't afford it. Luckily for me I'm not in the same boat as you guys and dropped $285.00 and bought the G.I. Joe Foot Locker set AND the Transformer Matrix of Leadership set so I'm happy as a pig in....well you get the point....

on to my question. Is it my imagination or do Flint and Lt.Falcon look an AWFUL LOT alike????

reply

yes, flint and falcon do look a lot alike. what's weird, though is that they made hawk look them in the movie.

reply

Hawk (depending on the version)
Flint
Lt.Falcon
Duke (except for the blonde hair)

could all be family...Quadlites LOL

imagine if Golobulus was Cobra Commander's father..

i suppose in a way he IS Serpentor's Father since Golobulus used mind minipulation to make Dr.Mindbender create serpentor.

on other hand Dr.Mindbender did physically create Serpentor so he could be looked as the father as well.

on by the same token all the warlords (Julius Caesar, Napoleon Bonaparte, Attila the Hun, Philip II of Macedon and his son Alexander the Great, Ivan the Terrible, Vlad the Impaler (aka Dracula), Hannibal, Genghis Khan, and Grigori Rasputin.) and Sgt. Slaughter could be considered Serpentor's father's as well since he shares their DNA.

or i suppose you could just go the easy route and say..."serpentor is a creation and has no father!"

aaah God bless perspectives, interpretations, and P.O.V.

Thanks very much for the early review!
So... what will they call the other two volumes of the season? 1.2? 1.3? Will that work?

And another thing, did the toy commercials have the original audio? They don't appear to on my copy of Shout's release of Transformers Season 1.

You're welcome

Since so many of these daily syndicated cartoons had like 60 + episodes per season, they typically split them into two; The original "G.I. Joe" release was "Season 1: Part 1" and then "Season 1: Part 2" etc. This time around I assume it will go "Season 1.2" then "Season 2.1" then finally "Season 2.2" Unless including the mini-series into the seasons proper will mean a 1.3 or 2.3.

And another thing, did the toy commercials have the original audio? They don't appear to on my copy of Shout's release of Transformers Season 1.

It sounds like the original audio to me but I could be wrong. Did the TF commercials have a dub of come sort? They did blur the kid's faces.

I love that they're releasing these again because my Chinese Transformers set is pretty well worn and I never got any of the G.I. Joe ones. I don't mind paying about 20 bucks per set when they come out instead of shelling out about 300 dollars to get the complete sets of both series. They're not wasting any time on the Transformers because Season 2 Part 1 is already up for pre-order. I love these sets so far. I just wish they wouldn't waste the time and resources to do the "More Than Meets The Eye" and "The M.A.S.S. Device" individual DVD's, especially since they're included in the season sets. They were okay, but everything that came after was so much better. Also, Shout needs to re-release G.I. Joe: The Movie because my VHS copy is getting pretty well worn. Yo Joe, let's transform and roll out!
