Ann's reason

I remember watching this as a teenager. There is an episode where Paul asks Ann how she ever got together with Martin. She just smiles and tells her story: basically she was 'a bit of a mess,' having been badly let down by someone else, and M was just sweet and kind and strong. Exactly what she needed.

It's a very nice moment, quite rare in a TV comedy of that era. It's just a little moment, but I really like it. It says so much about the show. The writers were empathic enough to know that we viewers were all secretly asking the same question, and they were subtle enough to answer it in a way that gave real depth to the characters, without being too 'heavy.' It is also beautifully acted.

However much we may laugh, sigh and wince at Martin, the one thing we never doubt is that he absolutely adores Ann. That is very moving, really. As is her continued tolerance of him - for the same reason.
