Worthy of a dvd release surely !

I remember watching both series of this excellent show when first aired on Channel 4 in the 80's. It's a good job I remember it, as I've seen absolutely nothing of it since ! Considering the amount of abysmal 'sitcoms' released in the UK over the last few years, it's about time this was dusted off and shown to a new generation. Simon Callow's performance is hysterical as the accident prone Tom Chance, and he is well supported by Brenda Blethyn. So come on Channel 4 - get this aired again or better still, get it pressed onto dvd (both series). In the words of Chance himself 'Buy definitely will I'

reply

I totally agree about getting a dvd released. However, I have been told that channel 4 do not know where the episodes are! It appears they are no longer with them. Does anyone know?

reply

My dad is Andrew Norriss, one of the writers of the show, and we still have video copies of all three series (not just two) in the house, but aside from that I'm really not sure if any other copies exist anywhere. It'd be a shame if they don't, I agree that it's beyond time for a DVD re-release.

reply

Ah yes, there were indeed three series, not two, as stated in my earlier post - was struggling on the memory front on that one, but like I said, it has been a while since I saw these ! Appreciate the update.
I have recently obtained the official vhs release of the first series, but alas, they never released the other two. If Channel 4 have indeed 'lost' these episodes then this is tragic news indeed ! I know for a fact that there are many people who want to see this in dvd glory, but if Ch4 no longer have the masters, then the probability of this happening looks bleaker than ever ! Best we could hope for is digitally remastered tapes to dvd, but quality obviously suffers, plus it would be nice to have interviews with Simon, Brenda and the main people behind the camera re their recollections of the show.
I suppose there is always hope that it may happen, you never know. 'Chance in a Million' deserves better, but please pass my thanks on to your dad for creating one of the funniest shows I've ever seen - I just wish I could see it all again !

Thanks for reading.

I have fond memories of watching this wonderful series on the Australian ABC. It was then, and remains, one of the best comedy series I have ever seen.
What are the chances of release of the other 2 series, or any kind of DVD release?
Some things do happen if you wait long enough-we have just had The Knack released here after many years of waiting.
What does Andrew Norriss think of a release?
It is so far superior in acting and script to any other sit-com I can think of-and for that, we thank him.

This is a very cheeky request but would there be any chance that you could copy the videos onto DVD or another tape. I am willing to pay for them. They were hilarious and my parents - in their late 80's now - have two episodes on tape and would love the rest. Absolutely hilarious - one of the best!!

Thanks to your dad.

Hi folks,
Someone sent me a screen grab from the show where I played the Jewel robber.
I can't remember where that scene was shot.??

Would dearly love to get hold of a copy of any or preferably all of these. Must rank as one of the best half dozen si coms ever and would be more than happy to pay for copies if any one could oblige.
Even better it is as travesty if these are not released on dvd given the rubbish that is. Can't believe that anyone could be so negligent as to lose the originals!

reply

Say thanks to your dad for 'Chance in a Million'. I hope he transfers these videos to digital - it would be a shame if these are lost too!

reply

I've just got three DVDs containing the entire collection of episodes (one series per DVD) from a guy on eBay. Shipped all the way from Australia no problems!

Boy it's great to see these again :-)

does anyone know for sure that ch4 have lost these?

ive been wanting to see them again for years.

reply

If anyone knows where I could get the series on DVD, PLEASE let me know as well - I remembered it from when I lived in Scotland in 1985, but I couldn't remember the name; I found it by looking up Simon Callow. It's possibly the only TV show I would bother watching on DVD.

reply

Yes, one suspects that advertising an illegal copy of a DVD which contains the programme in which one of the previous poster's father wrote, is perhaps not the best idea.

HI SaladJelly!
I lived in UK in 1984-87 and remember this show...I still tell people today how Simon (Tom) could drink a pint in 2 seconds. I would love to find it on YouTube or on DVD at Amazon or Ebay... you guys should get jiggy with that! I can't find this show anywhere on the net! Thanks so much~deb

I managed to get hold of all three series from someone in Australia, who recorded it on Australian TV, and transferred it to DVD. The transfer quality is somewhat poor, but at least they recorded every episode.

I couldn't agree more about an official DVD release for this wonderful show. An absolute dream team cast for a sitcom in Brenda Blethyn and Simon Callow. I had heard that Channel 4 had lost/disposed of the tapes of these series, which would be a heck of a shame if it were true, as that would mean we would never see it again.
I did get a DVD copy of all three series from e-bay on one of its periodic sales, but AFTER I had paid for it, and received it through the post (Good condition, plays perfectly well) e-bay sent me an e-mail saying they had pulled the advert for 'unspecified reasons'.
Even after this, if an official release became available, with a decent set of extras, I'd still buy a copy.
Here's hoping.

Some marvellous people have put some of the episodes on youtube. The Wedding one is there in several places.

I pre-ordered “Chance in a Million: the Complete Series” from senditcom (http://www.sendit.com/dvd/chance-in-a-million-the-complete-series/1022 3165.html)—the package of all three series was released on October 4—and I received it on Tuesday (19 Oct) here in Hobart, Tasmania.
I immediately watched all the episodes, and enjoyed the marathon immensely. After all the years waiting to see the shows again, having seen most of them on the ABC when they were first shown and repeated back in the late eighties, I’ve been longing to see favourite episodes such as “The Stuff of Dreams” (1. 6) and “The Taxman Cometh” (2.1).
Yesterday, my sons (13 and 10) watched all eighteen episodes in one go—I’ve been telling them for years that it was a classic sitcom—and they too enjoyed the marathon immensely, and were astonished when I observed afterwards that they had been watching the show for over six hours. I watched with them as well, apart from breaks making lunch and dinner, and found that I could watch episodes again with great enjoyment.
What I had not remembered from watching episodes on TV one week apart (and not always in sequence), but which is obvious from watching episodes sequentially, is how well the chronology of the romance is explained and presented: many episodes are set the morning after the previous show’s ending or a day or two later, and this, usually, is either immediately obvious or explained with a few words of dialogue.
The extra features, sadly, don’t amount to much: a PDF of the script of “The Wedding”; a few commentaries from Andrew Norriss and Richard Fegen (the writers) and Simon Callow—di eos ament—; and some photographs. The picture quality, however, was better than I’d expected. Still, what makes “Chance in a Million” such a great show is the fine scripts and the great acting.
So, despite the mono sound and the 4:3 ratio and the ’eighties video quality, “Chance in a Million: the Complete Series”, for me, is five stars. One son says he rates the show “ten out of ten”, and the other says “nine or ten out of ten”.

reply

What does "di eos ament" mean?
Can't find it anywhere on the internet.
What did Simon Callow have to say?
He ignores the show in his latest autobiography.

"My will is strong but my won't is weak"

reply

Di eos ament means “may the gods love them.”

Simon Callow says little more than praise, gossip and occasional minutiae: for example, he noted that he could not drive at the time so, if you look closely, either someone else drives Tom’s car or scenes are cut just as he is about to drive. Callow does intimate (and rightly so) that the rôle of Tom was a wonderful one.
