Will This Ever Come Out On DVD?

I remember watching this on Showtime when I was a kid. Though the series was "well agreed ahead of it's time" with it's subject matter my father and I really enjoyed it. And if I remember correctly I think it's regular scheduled time slot was on Saturday night at around 8 or 8:30pm on Showtime because an episode of SuperDave would usually come on afterwards:) The acting was phenomenal and I sure hope this series will eventually be released on DVD. And ironically for a series that wasn't on cable very long my father still brings this show up ever now and then in conversation. Please release the complete collection on DVD soon!

Brothers is one of those shows I've almost given hope on ever seeing on DVD. While I have probably 90% of the episodes still on VHS, they're of course not as crisp as they could be. I think the show's first airing during the week was Wednesday but replayed a couple of times during the week. I remember first pulling out my old tapes after Paul Regina died at such a young age, I so identified with Cliff. I wish the show had not centered so much on Sam the last season (with no explanation of what happened to Robin Riker.)

And for the very least, get Logo to rerun these episodes!

I used to watch this show was I was 14, with my 6-year-old brother. Needless to say, I'm gay now and he's NOT!

I just came across this post from 2006, but can't find DVD availability anywhere else...

Hello!
I've been a fan of the show for a long time and back in February, I contacted Showtime to see if it was ever going to be released on DVD...

Then on June 19th I recieved an email from Showtime...
Subject
Is your series "Brothers" available on DVD?

I wish this would come out on DVD... there are plenty of other shows out on DVD that are far less deserving. I have a few episodes on VHS that I taped but I dont even have a VCR connected to my system anymore. HEY SHOWTIME....RELEASE "BROTHERS" ON DVD.

reply

I have tried various channels to implore Showtime to release this on DVD (as have many others) only to have my pleas fall upon deaf ears. By all means let us make a director's cut boxed set of Hanna Montana but leave this 80's gem in the dustbins of television history....does anyone remember the other show before Brothers called Steambath about a group of people in heaven...another great show gone. Rock on Mylie!!

reply

Steambath was actually based on a 1973 stage play starring Bill Bixby and Valerie Perrine, among others. The series ran for a handful of episodes, I believe, so it's doubtful those will ever be seen again. The original taped version of the stage play, however, is available on DVD.

I've been emailing and trying to drum up support for LOGO airings or a DVD release for Brothers as well - with absolutely no results. I'm now working on converting and uploading a few episodes to YouTube from my VHS tapes, even though I only have about half the original run. Hopefully that'll get a few more fans to make some noise about finally seeing a Brothers DVD release. This series deserves to be seen and enjoyed by new generations.

I'm just today reading this string... Whether you were successful or not, I've got to thank you sincerely for making the efforts you did. I know something about trying to be a voice - a lone voice - to support an overlooked work of creativity one would think would have more support and be better known, and I know how frustrating it is that no one seems to be listening. If/when this series makes it to DVD, I'll be thanking my memory of the person who posted to imdb for helping to make it happen. Thanks again.

(BTW, just one of the works I've tried to bring attention to worth mentioning for sharing the Gay-and-accessible-but-ignored theme is the Pansy Division album "Total Entertainment" -- Worth picking up!)

Does anyone know how to contact Showtime as I want to send an email to them with a request to release this. It's just too funny to not be released on DVD!!!!

reply

I agree, it needs to be on dvd. I would buy 3 sets just as gifts. My entire family loves this show and we have many great memories watching this show.

This is what I found, I don't know how accurate it is though

I too wish it would be released. I have them all on VHS........but how long will that last before they are not playable. This was a GREAT show......way ahead of it's time.
I didn't really care for it after Joe married Sam. There was just something missing after that.

reply

Are your VHS tapes playable? I also had them all but then 2 Tapes disappeared, so i'm missing about a season and a half. Giovanni7 and I converted most episodes to disc but we were missing a few. Any chance we can find the missing ones?

reply

I'd even settle to see it rerun somewhere in syndication. But DVD is even better. I mean if a set for 1st & Ten can be cobbled together, Brothers should be no problem.

I remember this series well. It helped me come out in college way back when it first played. Why it hasn't been released on DVD makes no sense. Hell they just released all the episodes of "Joanie Loves Chacchi" on DVD! So they can put out crap like that but not this????

reply

Never heard of this show either, and I watched early cable during the '80s,too. I'm kind of surprised it hasn't gotten much acknowledgement as a groundbreaking program, considering the subject matter: Here's a few episodes on the tube:

Thanks for the link. The quality was terrible but that's to be expected.
