The pilot episode and the main character name

Which came first? The chicken or the egg?

Did the scriptwriter have no idea what to call his main character and just brainstormed words based on images from the pilot script (fellow playing the strings of a cello to a hawk - or eagle) or was that a hamfisted attempt at symbolism that was about as subtle as a ballpine hammer to the skull?
