Best Sherlock Holmes adaption, hands down.

Brett's portrayal was spot on with what I imagined when reading the stories.

Brett was most definitely the definitive Holmes! Other than the odd Rathbone or Cushing movie, Brett was the first Sherlock Holmes I enjoyed watching and has left a lasting impression ever since, production values of the show were good too for the time – thank God it wasn’t the BBC!

reply

Why exactly? I very much enjoyed the Miss Marple show starring Joan Hickson and that one was BBC.

BBC drama these days is like a crazed virtue signalling student spouting its views rather than entertaining or being true to adaptions.

The BBC can afford to make programmes that set an agenda rather than entertain because it’s not a commercial station, with UK households forced to pay an annual TV Licence if they own a TV.

PC madness affects so many of their shows these days, if Miss Marple were remade today by the BBC I wouldn’t be surprised if they'd make her a lipstick lesbian foiling murders committed solely by old white men.

Well yes, nowadays the BBC completely sucks, but I think this could've been good if it had been on that channel in the 80s.

ITV's Miss Marple and the later Poirot movies also suffered from PC nonsense, unfortunately.

reply

Oh yeah, Sherlock Holmes would of been similar if it had been on the BBC in the 80's, but just little things ITV added were great like the Strand Magazine illustrations when there was a commercial break. There really was a lot of love and admiration for the source material from production on this.

reply

I agree. I've just started watching it again after not having seen it in more than 10 years. Can you believe the BBC was actually where I first saw this show?😆

reply

Completely agree. Brett's Holmes is perfect, unequalled.
