Production Order ?

Does anybody know if the last episode of Season 1 was filmed at the same time as the first few episodes. There seemed to be characters that were in the first few episodes that disappeared a few episodes in but then were back for the last episode and then Dr. Death popped up out of no where but was missing from the championship game. Was there a longer pilot that got split into single episodes?
