Well, Croft and LLoyd did repeat themselves a lot, but the actors knew how to get the laugh out of it.

"Keeping up appearances" also relied heavily on running gags, but still, both shows rock.

I know. The running jokes were a part of the show's charm.

Fawlty Towers is fantastic, but the reason it is fantastic is that it only lasted for twelve episodes.

Fawlty Towers, Blackadder, Yes Minister - best of the best for me and they all limited their seasons to 6 episodes each year thus allowing the writers to take a break.

However I do have fond fond memories of Allo Allo. I looked at the episode list here and season 5 has 26 episodes, in hindsight I think this might have ruined the show as I think I started to get tired of it around then. Repeating jokes work fine in small doses, not for a continuous 26 week run.

"Listen very carefully, I shall say this only once." may have been repeated over and over, but every time there was a unique retort and that was funny.

"..but every time there was a unique retort"

No, there wasn't. Often Rene just rolled his eyes, and that was it.

I see what you did there.

The running jokes were part of the appeal for me.
