Why such a long time between first two episodes?

Was it as one of those comedy playhouse things such as Ronnie Barker did?

Yeah I reckon so.One of those pilots just to see the audience reaction.Let's look at this way,it was still a touchy subject for alot of people to make fun out of,so I don't think a full series would've just been commisioned without testing the viewers first.

"Are You Being Served" had something similar; that pilot hadn't even been shown and it was due to the Munich Olympics terrorist attacks that BBC showed it at all; they had nothing else.

According to the 30 years of 'Allo 'Allo book, it was moslty because of David Croft's busy schedule. He was also writing and producing Are you being served and Hi-de-Hi at the time.
