Why did Captain Hans Geering only appear in 20-odd episodes?

Geering was by far my favourite character, with his "'tler!" catchphrase (and yes, I thought he said 'Klop' for about 30 years until my wife explained it to me!). Why did Sam Kelly only do three series? Was he kicked off or did he leave of his own accord? Just seemed odd removing one of the central characters.

Sam Kelly simply decided to leave. Then years later he admitted he regretted the decision. He was great in it.

Hans is the most hilarious and fun character probably in any TV show I have ever seen. I would watch this show just for him. Of course Maria is the other side of the coin - funny, petite, cute and a little bit sexy as well (Yvette tries hard, but just doesn't come off as that unique - she could've been replaced more easily - Maria had a personality).

Too bad both of them left, and after that, the show lost its 'flow' and became a bit more rigid and repetitive, with annoying characters added and the same jokes in every episode. It was still funny sometimes, but not as unique and entertaining anymore. Crabtree and the bulgy-eyed cartoon character girl just weren't the same.

Hans and Maria had the perfect balance between 'realistic' and 'humorous' - but the new characters relied on a stupid gimmick (can't ever learn french, so he mispronounces words, ha ha) and a completely over-the-top personality that isn't relatable whatsoever (Maria's character seemed still believable within all the funniness and quirks).

Hans was a great, playful comic relief and counterbalance to the more grumpy, serious and angry superior's orderbarking nature. Without Hans and Maria, the show became very unbalanced, and sometimes almost a pain to watch.

Yeah, he wanted to leave on a high, while the show was still popular, and thought three years was a long enough run and it would probably go downhill from there. I feel kinda bad for him, but don't blame him, far better to leave on a high than outstay your welcome. If there's an afterlife I hope he gets to play the captain a bit longer :)

Kung fu movies are like porn. There's 1 on 1, then 2 on 1, then a group scene...

Whilst Captain Balotelli was not bad, Allo' Allo' was never the same again without Capt Hans Geering. RIP Sam Kelly.

** Bertorelli

It's footy season and the dread of Balotelli coming back to the Premiership appears to be in my head.
