I SAW IT...But :-(

I wish I hadn't. The story wasn't any good. There's a reason that this film was released on DVD only this year. It's not very good. It took me 2 days to watch it.
If it wasn't for Isabella getting naked, there's no other reason to watch this film.

The transfer is decent. The subs are somewhat laughable. The read like the translator didn't know English. And used a French - American Dictionary to do the translation.

If you want to see her naked a lot. And full frontal too, then watch this film.

If you're expecting a good Isabelle Adjani film, then look elsewhere.

The story was kind of frustrating since it all comes down to that idiot father - even though he grows to love Elle, he still refuses to give her his surname, due to the shame he feels over the rape by which she was conceived. Then he's tries to molest her and she releases he doesn't really regard her as his daughter, yet she can't help but continue to love him because he treated her so lovingly during her childhood. The whole revenge scheme was a kind of psychological defense mechanism to stave off the realization that all her issues stemmed from his cruelly paradoxical treatment of her. It's actually pretty psychologically realistic though. Stuff like this really happens. I wouldn't be surprised if it was based on a true story.

totally disagree. I loved it

I found her performance very moving... and keep watching it over and over. Great film.
I agree with Roell about the psychological depth; its an interesting study of how parents can really mess up a persons life. I personally like a film that keeps you guessing; one that is challenging. Given that I paid nearly $30 for it, I like that fact that I have to watch it more than once just to get the story.
As for the translations, I know enough French to think they did a decent job with the translation, not sure what you found laughable about it, of course you could be watching a different edition of it.
As for why it was only release on DVD in North America recently, its because there is not a lot of demand in North America for French films. In Europe there are at least 3 different versions of the packaging available; not sure if that means they are different reproductions but only one of those three is apparently rated for the North American format.
