Who owns the rights to this film?

And does anyone know why it hasn't been released on DVD? I've seen many requests across the net and it's always be sold (and purchased) at places like eBay. It seems to have a fairly decent amount of demand but no one seems to be taking advantage of it...

reply

Excellent question. I keep checking to see if it has been released on DVD but.. nothing. I loved this movie.

Got me thinkin'... accouding to IMDB it was released by Orion Pictures Corp. They were sold to MGM in 1997. I'm going to try to contact MGM for furter information.

Here's the other site I used.

According to the MGM website they don't have Yellowbeard as VHS so maybe they don't own the movie. Hrm...

Checking Warner Bros (as it was a joint venture)...

http://www2.warnerbros.com/main/homepage/homepage.html

Nothing.. hrm..
1983 so it should be under the MGM name.... hrm...

Jeremy, great dude at Hollywood video, couldn't find who made the film or who owned it in his 'big book of movies.'

If I find anything ... I'll post. :( But I should go back to work.

if you find anymore info, please post it :)

That's exactly why I want to know! I was thinking about starting a petition, but without knowing who it needs to go to, what good would it do?

reply

I went and sent an e-mail to [email protected], since Anchor Bay has released other "cult" movies like "Yellowbeard". Maybe if enough people e-mail them wanting the movie, they'll get the rights and release it.

i know the writer, bernard mckenna - he is an occasional lecturer at my college...i'll endeavour to ask him, if you want.

My Mom really wants to buy a legitimate copy of this movie. She has looked everywhere. She also bought a copy off of a website which turned out to be bootlegged and unplayable. Would love to hear more about this and who has the rights to this movie. It seems many people want it and people are taking advantage.

Ok, it's been almost a year--what did you find out from your friend?

reply

Wow, Pick a number. I see I'm not alone with this problem. I have a satellite taped copy and for me that's as good as it gets. I don't know who has the rights to it but they'd be smart to get it out on DVD. I've checked over the years and this movie is most definately "OUT OF PRINT" or "N/A". You can't even find it on a list to say its out of print half the time.

My advice for the present is to wait until it airs and get someone with a Satellite Recorder or TIVO to capture digitally. That's about as good as it'll get.

God, What a mess? This film could quite easily be lost in the legal rubble if you read the article of what happend.

In short as you know MGM probably has it somewhere or might know where it can be found. We need to get them to get this on DVD so get them looking and start e-mailing and writing them.

Maybe Criterion would be interested in picking this one up?

reply

MGM is now owned by Sony and the last movie to have the MGM logo will be The Amityville Horror (2005) remake, which in my opinion is highly depressing. MGM's entire film library has also been sold some of it to Sony and some of it to others. If Sony has acquired the rights to it then you may very well never see it on DVD.

My Dad still has this recording on Beta. I haven't seen the movie in at least 15 years. I remember it being very funny. Why don't they run it on TV more often?

I managed to get an x rental VHS from Cananda last year. It played ok a couple of times but the last time I tried it, it wouldn't play :-(
I have found it on DVD on EBay... It's only about $12.99USD so I guess it might be ok, I Hope!! It's got to be better than the stuffed VHS I bought!!

Does anyone know anything about the DVD's you see on Ebay? Are the legit or some home made thing? Some of them say sealed?

reply

Yellowbeard has never been released on DVD anywhere, ever. It HAS, however, been released on Laserdisc. If you're lucky, you'll be able to find someone who has ripped the Laserdisc version and put that on a DVD (still a bootleg copy, but at least it's higher quality than the very poor quality VHS rips people are passing off as new DVDs).

Anyone selling a "sealed DVD" of Yellowbeard and claiming that it isn't a bootleg is lying.

My PAL LaserDisc version (95min/play 99min/film) is branded ORION on the front and A HEMDALE film at the back... On LaserDisc trough Rank Video... Plus "Package Photograph and Artwork (c) 1983 Yellowbeard Associates, A Greenberg Brother Partnership" and my LaserDisc is not "rotten" as some are because of thin aluminium layers and bad glue, but my player is dead! Yes, it's very sad and strange that Yellowbeard not is released on DVD yet!!

funny i found this thread looking to see if there is any dvd version yet. i have a vhs copy that i personally bought new in the 80's. i saw this movie at the theatres and loved it. what is the best way to copy a vhs to a digital format.

I just searched NetFLix to add this film, but no luck; and NetFlix seems to have almost everything. Keep trying, please, those of you who are trying. Thanks.

I would love to get this movie on dvd.

I have it on VHS and it is getting kind of worn out, but still playable, but the scene where Yellowbeard threatens Kahn's caracter with the daggers has been edited out so that one of the coolest sentences in movie history - Yellowbeard: If you say you don't know where it is, I'll nail your tits to the table! - is missing from my version :(

I WANT IT ON DVD!

Thanks for the time
