Absolutely Amazing

i find it amazing that anyone can slag off this film, it is the funniest thing ever, packed with comedy legends at their best. The complete insanity of the whole film emulates the best work of the Pythons, and i dont know how Cleese can slag it off when he hasnt made a decent movie in 20 years and clearly is only in it for the money these days. He doesnt like it cus' he is overshadowed by chapman et al in the film...i mean fierce creatures.....anybody??

cant wait for the dvd, hope theres extras

I haven't seen this movie in over 20 years, but I remember absolutely loving it.

So I'm very happy to see that it finally being released on DVD so that I may share it with my kids (whom are all huge Python fans) - the older ones appreciate the Cheech/Chong humour; the younger ones really like Peter Boyle because I'm addicted to Everybody Loves Raymond and they like his cranky dad; and my sisters & brother used to tease me about my big eyes as a kid, saying I looked like Marty Feldman..

I agree with you re: Fierce Creatures

erm.

First, I love this film too. But I have to say, don't overplay it fellas. :D

It ain't that good! Peter Boyle and Marty Feldman are pretty flat. They're far below what they did in Young Frankenstein. There is extreme silliness throughout it's entire running time. I just don't want anybody to buy/rent this expecting "Monty Python's Pirate Comedy", because this is below much of what they did as a complete group.

I'm not dissing. I've had 5 VHS copies of this on my shelf in fears that a DVD wouldn't be coming. I'd planned to make my own. I'm thrilled beyond belief that this has made it (it's pre-ordered). I guess we can thank Disney for the interest in pirate movies (we already got The Pirate Movie and Ice Pirates which I am equally thrilled about). Anyway, I just don't want anybody to think this is anything but a silly little 80s comedy that happens to have a nice size legion of fans, myself included. Heck, if you own the other 2 pirate comedies I mentioned, then get this, otherwise give it a rent.

Everything you say is true, but I'm still thrilled that it's being released

~Just saw the new DVD~

Wow, this really picks up after the opening sequence! I thought it would be a turkey after the long credits, cheesy score and pointless opening but the better castmembers, visuals, and Pythonesque charisma immediately predominate the next very large chunk of the film.

Graham is definitely the underrated Python. He's from Mars.

OMG! Chapman would've loved his own funeral. Brilliant! Although some of the attendees didn't look like they quite "got it". I teared up a little. Thanks for the link purple. :)

Monster Python fan going back to beginning days on US PBS showings. Brit friends filled me in on details. For some reason I was elsewhere when Yellowbeard released.
What a classic comedy rip on all the standards. The French, 'Mrs. Beard', the Royal Navy, etc. Loved the little touches like when they'd fool the blind guy by coin on a cord making clinking sound -- it's the things like that.
"Shall I meet you in the pump room, captain? delivered by Bowie the sailor....
Spoofing sailing ship leading actors like Brando and such adds to the fun.
This isn't shown much on TV so grab it unless have copy. It's one of the good ones from that era of take-off movies that played on specific themes like Westerns, Airport, military. Rewards viewers who have a wide knowledge of films.
Kahn looking at outlines of islands. "Stand by to hide".
I mean just so much to take in. Guess comedy comes in waves since they don't make this style today. We get strong comdedy yes but more like individual players, especially the women leading ones. But ensemble comedies aren't done that often. One of best is The Expendables series, esp 1 & 2. But that's not a flat out goofy fest like this one. Grab it and keep it for days when on a low. This will lift a sour mood quickly!

Just caught this on TV...it's bad but absolutely hilarious, and has that style of humor that you couldn't put in a movie nowadays without getting Tumblr protest campaigns made against you. Man, I miss Orion pictures.

"It's bad but absolutely hilarious".

I don't get this - if a comedy is hilarious and thereby fulfills its primary function, then it cannot reasonably be called bad, can it...?
