I actually love the idea of this movie. But I hate some scenes where it shows a lil girl eat uncooked rice. I'am Indonesian and my mom lived in 1960's era. She said that we were hungry but it doesn't make us want to eat uncooked rice on the street. Yeah, Soekarno is too idealist & he seemed not to care about feeding his people. But he wasn't that evil. He would never send any cop or agent to kill a cameramen/journalist. It's just too hyperbolic.

And also the part of people in the airport. I bet there was no one dare to go to the airport when the government already asked them to stay in their houses & don't panic. Remember the part when Hartono (Hamilton's driver) heard about the revolution from the radio? He heard the government said Indonesian people to "stay in your houses & don't panic, then everything would be alright." So, it's nonsense to see so many people panic in the airport.

And yeah, I hate the way this movie showed that most Indonesian girls were prostitute at that time. No they were not. My mom lived in that era and she was just an ordinary junior highschool girl in 1965. She was normal and she was not a beggar not or a prostitute. And I belive there were so many other normal girls in Indonesia at 1965.

Well, I think this movie had potentials to be a good movie. So bad, there were some big errors. Not much, but big.

With all due respect, I believe you may be wrong on one count and partially mistaken on another. In times of political and social upheaval panic comes easily to many. A declaration from any official scource urging people to "not panic" seems to have the opposite effect on too many. I believe a great many incidents from throughout the twentieth century on all the continents would bear this out as being true. As to the partial mistaken portion(prostitution), numerous reputable news scources have repeatedly documented the plight of some, but by no means a majority, of the poorer families in developing nations around the globe. Even more developed nations, such as the U.S., experience such difficulties in form or another. Such things seem to stem, in no small part, from things like a general lack of education. I know many people, especially in more rural localities, that have less than a high school education and seem to be always struggling to make it. More so, by a wide margin, than those with even an assosciates degree from a community college.
While you are rightly entitled to your opinion, I don't believe the director's intent was to vilify in any way the people of Indonesia. Instead, I believe his intent was to convey the bleakness of a turbulent point in history. If I have offended in any way,I apologize .

I believe the little girl was putting rice into her mouth just to carry it home, as she had no other means to carry it. I don't know what gave me this idea; I may have heard it somewhere. But I never thought the little girl was actually eating uncooked rice. And just because the movie shows a bunch of prostitutes doesn't mean it is trying to say all women were prostitutes. The women shown were ones who were so deperately poor that they'd do anything for money.

It is a wonderful film, one of the best of the last three decades, IMHO.
