If you ask me, Linda Hunt should have been in the Best Actress category for this role. Sigourney Weaver's role was actually quite minimal in this film. We actually spent more time getting to know Linda Hunt's character.

Interesting point. My guess is that it's not the characters' airtime but the romantic theme itself that defines the importance of the characters.

Eg. in Alladin, we see Jafar more than Jasmine, but we'd still call him a 'supporting character'.

I agree, she and Gibson are the leads here.

I always felt she was a borderline lead/support case. According to the obsessive behind Screentime central https://www.screentimecentral.com/supporting-actress Hunt has 37 minutes 07 seconds of screen time, 32.38% of the film's running time, which is certainly more than Weaver, I would think.

Whatever - Hunt's win is one of the best ever. A mediocre film, but a GREAT performance - funny, charismatic, riveting. It doesn't feel like stunt casting in the slightest - she is mesmerising every moment she is on screen, and the film loses a lot when she is gone from it.

I always remember ‘what then must we do.’ Great line from a great character.
