Soundtrack/anyone know of the name of...

There was a song, an instrumental, that played during a driving scene in the movie. I have heard the song elsewhere, and I believe it has been used in other movies even, but I could not figure out which of the 6 credited songs it was, or if it was even credited since it lasted less than 60 seconds I believe. If someone might know the name or if there's a soundtrack available with that song on it, I'd be most grateful.

I know what song you are referring to well. It's by Vangelis, and it sounds like it has been used in another film because Vangelis' scores all sound somewhat alike (aka "Chariots of Fire", "Terminator 2"). The composition is an excerpt from "Opera Sauvage" - I think it's called "L'enfant", aka child, or something like that. If you are searching around on a music search engine, it might also be under simply "Love Theme".

Hope this helps. I loved the song when I heard it too!

I would like to add another great piece of music from the movie, it's the theme for "Kwan", a very nice and peaceful piece of music.

The orriginal score is by Maurice Jarre, he wrote the music to Lawrence of Arabia and Dr.Zevago, so if you liked the rest of the score, you may want to check him out. A very good composer.

Do you happen to know the name of the operatic piece that Mel Gibson listened to in Kwan's cabin?

If you have this information, please email me at [email protected], since I don't check this site very often. Would appreciate!

Richard Strauss, Four Last Songs, sung by Dame Tiri de Kanawa==in particular, the second movement (song) Truly beautiful. After hearing it, I had to find out---of course, pre-internet==and CDs!

Music in the film: you have to buy 3 separate pieces to get it all -- it was never realeased as a single piece: 1. Opera Sauvage by Vangelis; 2. Kiri Te Kanawa (correct spelling), the opera singer, singing from the Four Last Songs by Strauss (and she's not singing "September" as the film credits indicate --it's actually the German piece called Beim ?); 3. Maurice Jarre's original score for the film. I have them all. Truly the most beautiful music composite heard on film, imho.

The Strauss song is "Beim Schlafengehen" (Going to Sleep). He wrote the Four Last Songs in a different order from the one they're usually performed in; Beim Schlafengehen is usually the third one.

reply

Correct. Strauss wrote it about 1948, some 17 years before the action of the film. I didn't know Kiri Te Kanawa had done a recording of it by 1965 (she would have been only about 21 at the time)--unless having Billy play that particular recording for Guy was an anachronism on the filmmakers' part. It probably was, since a discography I've seen gives the date of her recording of the Four Last Songs as 1979 and doesn't mention any prior one.
The song was also used prominently in "The Hours", where Meryl Streep's character listens to a recording of it at a stressful time.
The lyrics, like those of most of the other songs in the Strauss group, are thought to refer to death. The ones here speak of the soul's wish to soar up into the magic of the night.

I heard the same theme tonight while watching Chariots Of Fire. It was playing as the athletes marched into the stadium at the Paris Olympics. I thought, "I know that music."It took me a bit but then I remembered it from The Year Of Living Dangerously as what I call "the lover's theme".

The track requested by the original message poster, is L'Enfant by Vangelis and is on his CD THEMES - Vangelis

A little bit of trivia:
This was the piece that director Hugh Hudson was going to use as the theme music for "Chariots of Fire" until Vangelis composed the now-famous original music for that film.

The theme actually was used in Chariots Of Fire. I'm watching Chariots for the umpteenth time tonight and I heard the theme as athletes are marching in the opening ceremonies at the Paris Olympics. I thought, "I know that music. What is it from?" Then it hit me it was sort of the "lover's theme" from The Year Of Living Dangerously.

I love that piece of music, and I always assumed Maurice Jarre wrote it!

There was another piece of music that I loved from this film. It was the music (i think piano or possibly electronic keyboard) that played when Sigourney Weaver was walking in the rain, thinking of Mel.

Does anyone know the name of that piece?

reply

It's the same music that we heard a little earlier when Guy and Jill drive away from the ambassador's party. In the scene you mentioned, she's trying to decide whether to reveal to Guy the classified information she'd received. In both scenes, the parties are just making an important decision that will force them to "live dangerously".
I assumed it was by Jarre, the film's composer, but some of the comments here seem to suggest it was by Vangelis. Whichever composed it, it's stunning as used in both scenes.
