How about our big scene: the birth scene where a fully grown man is born from a woman?

Harry

reply

Of course Harry! Nice to 'see' you here! FAB news XTRO 4! (Yeh!) If I were you I'd send-up the 'Species' franchise!

I saw Xtro on Video last month, and I picked up the trilogy box-set a few weeks later. Were you influenced by H.P. Lovecraft at all?

The first Xtro reminds me a lot of one of his stories; "Through the Gates of the Silver Key" similar story - 'guy returns to Earth no longer human'

Xtro II's similar to another Lovecraft "From Beyond" - 'scientist unleashes monster from another dimension'

I love the way Xtro 3 beatifully sends-up the 'Roswell craze' which I remember as a kid in the mid-90s, plus the Alien (who I thought was rather cute) being as empathetic as (understandably) violent.

My Xtro moments;

Maryam (hot stuff) D'Abo as alien-egg machine

Phil Sayer (RIP) passing-on alien DNA to Simon Nash

Poor Bernice Stegers, after losing her son, boyfriend and husband (again), getting (as you said Harry on 'Xtro Xposed') 'placenta-like-thing' in the face (presumeably so she too can be 're-born') I have to say Harry despite being 'off-the-wall' and 'pointless' I found it profoundly disturbing!

Hope to write my own suitably bizarre sci-fi/horror.

reply

when i visit my brother, i usually try to come up with some interesting horror/scifi movies to watch. i always try to pull out the most bizarre/obscure ones available in the US that i know of. well, there we were watching XTRO DVD commentary and PATRICK shows up.....we had just watched that one. we looked at each other in satisfaction and smiled. he loved Patrick it as much as i did.

reply

Yeah, that's certainly a unique and memorable moment, and it should be shown in all sex education videos to promote abstinence!

Ok seriously, aside from that scene I would have to say the best moments were:

- When the Sam/alien first returns and reconstructs itself in the woods
- Tony infects Analise in the bathroom
- The almost completely deteriorated Sam looks back from the hillside
- When the skeletal creature takes Tony away in the finale
- The original "clones" ending

......

That was truly bizarre and mesmerising (especially from my childhood memories).
XTRO reminds me of Andrzej Zulawski's Possession!

LOL that was pretty crazy by any standards of what this movie was trying to do...

1.Nude French au pair girl.
2.Terrier eating Sam's afterbirth.
3.Clown with a hypnotic, psychedelic, killer yo-yo.

Oh, I forgot another favorite moment - quite peaceful :) - when Rachel brings Sam home and asking: "Do you want some drink?" I love Philip Sayer's acting in this moment!!
And don't forget his eyes after bottle throw, when Tony call him from another room!..
It was a talented guy... R.I.P.

Amen, brother! If I were Bromley, I sure as heck wouldn't have used a telephoto lens for that scene where D'Abo's lying down all naked -- I'd've averred that no lens like this was available so I'd have the excuse to shoot very close up. Hoo-ah!

reply

Wow, this movie sure had it's share of memorable scenes

The hot au pair has to top the list, but for gross out, the full grown human birth was great, and the snake egg snack. And the strange XTRO creature that was hit by the car.

reply

Great movie to watch for Halloween!

reply

All great scenes- but one that hasn't been mentioned yet is where the kids dad (sorry, I'm crap with film character names) calls his wife from the phone box, can barely speak, and the mouthpiece melts (this is before he officially resembles a human and just after the brilliant 'woman giving birth to fully grown man' scene). Later when she sees him she asks- 'did you phone earlier?' and he says 'no'.

Simple, but cool.

Why would a snake named "Harry" have eggs?

reply

I've been waiting to met you for twenty five years.

Of course, the snake was called Harry after me. But nobody mentioned that it's the wrong sex to lay eggs. In fact, I don't even know if snakes do lay eggs at all.

Nice to meet you! It never even occurred to me that you might have been the sake's namesnake... snake's namesake I mean. Yes, snakes are of the reptile persuasion and lay eggs, and I always found it kind of funny that a presumably female snake was named Harry; it added to the bizarre nature of the picture.

"I've been living on toxic waste for years, and I'm fine. Just ask my other heads!"

reply

Some snakes lay eggs, some give birth to live young.

reply

Oh yeah, I completely forgot about that.

reply

-birth scene
-the hot roommate's boobs
-the toy soldier scene
-When the annoying boyfriend flips out and says "you're f-ing crazy!" or something like that...he looked so goofy.

reply

The toy soldier scene was really creepy.

1. When the people in the car first spot the creature on the side of the road.
2. The French girl's nude scene.
3. The toy soldier that busts into the room.

3. toy soldier comes to life and goes berserk

This was the scene I always remembered it for, ever since I saw it on video as a kid back in the day.

I also like the blatantly tacked on typical American 80's horror ending. :D

While the bright light and Panther reminds me of a 80's music video :D I think the endless "Mummy" played over the top gives it a certain something.

reply

I love Xtro! I remember watching it with my dad on VHS back then, and I revisited it a couple years ago on DVD. Still enjoyed it!

reply

Two things I liked about this movie:

1. The scene when the creature is first spotted on the side of the road. That's really quite horrible as the lights briefly showed some ghastly, strange being (which was impossible to make out what it was) and then the car seemed to hit it.

2. The overall family drama-like quality of the film. Unlike most films in this genre, including big A-movies, this movies looked at times like a simple family drama soap opera. I mean the scenes of mother and her boyfriend disussing what to do with the returned father. That's so simple and mundane, and contrasted nicely with all the rest that was going on.

reply

LOL!!!

"The scene when the creature is first spotted on the side of the road."

That was one of the creepiest moments I've ever seen in a movie. And I've been a horror fan for over 30 years now. That brief moment when the camera is inside the car and we see the creature by the side of the road on the left. I watched XTRO for the first time a couple of years ago and that scene still gives me the creeps. It's somehow ruined right after when we see a better glimpse of the creature.

reply

Agreed 100%. That road scene still creeps me out when I think about it (and the sudden loud synth note adds effect).

The part where the live soldier cuts the chain lock as soon as the door opens is creepy too.

Also, don't forget, the UFO lands, and instead of an actual UFO landing, we see a bright, blinding light. When the light fades, there is fire everywhere. Moments later, the alien grows out of the ground.

I'm surprised there wasn't a scene the next day in which a report of a UFO sighting made it to the news. Plus, if there was that much fire in the woods, it would have turned into a forest fire within moments.

Plus, wouldn't someone have eventually found the body of the lady in the cottage?

BLACKOUT!

reply

Of course a UFO sighting in a rural area is a dime a dozen, so nobody would take it seriously. The fire would have probably naturally burned out soon after it started. There are like 5 sunny days in England per year and it also rains a lot. The lady in the cabin probably would not have been found for a long time, if nobody was expecting her or supposed to visit her. Maybe she was a hermit?
