Large words on the screen?

Can anyone tell me the significance of the words that sometimes appear on the screen? They appear at significant scenes, I'm not sure if it is just my copy: it should be fairly obvious what I mean if this is a common thing. They fill up a large section of the side of the screen whenever they appear.

I'll try and get a screenshot if I can (not sure how to go about it).
