I am a retired cop, and I tear up every time that I see this ending. When the other officers join in on the caravan it is one of the most emotional scenes that I have ever seen. I love this movie and just recorded it so that my wife can watch it for the first time.

reply

Yes it is a great ending that never fails to make me cry.

reply

Agreed. The ending always gets me. It is like this huge relief, and you so empathize with the characters...the music, the convoy of police escoring the boy to his mother...yep, makes me tear-up every time.

I think every cop who has ever dealt with a missing child wants that kind of ending. Its that one ending that drives them to being involved with cases like that. 99% of the time I am sure the end result is heartbreaking but just to see that one reunion must make it all worth it. I'd be balling like a baby. In fact any show that reunites a missing child with their parent or guardian (there was recent SVU episode where Stabler reunites a missing brother with his brother who raised him, played by guy who played Klitz in The Girl Next Door, after the brother went to an elaborate scheme to get the case reopened). The ending is moving as well, all endings like that move me. The ending of this movie is probably the most moving and powerful moment in any movie movie in the history of film. I am not one of those guys who declares this sport the greatest, that resteraunt the best, I know that speaking in absolutes is so subjective. But in this case I can. I get moved at the end of Shawshank. I get moved when William Wallace thrusts his sword in the air and screams after the Victory at Falkirk. I get moved with "the game of catch" at the end of Fileld od Dreams. I get moved at the end of Antwon Fisher when he gets what he was dreaming about at the beginning of the movie. But this movie is on another level all together and nothing comes close to the overwhelming emotion you feel at the reunuin. And the emotion never goes away. I can catch the last 15 minutes of the movie, like some also said on here, and knowing the story behind it I'll lose it again. It never goes away. If after watching this movie from start to finish and if you are not crying at the end, you are a heartless and you need to see a shrink because you are teetering on the line of sociopath.

I enjoyed your comment, but a little FYI:

Paul Dano, who played Klitz in The Girl Next Door, was not the actor you're thinking of in that Law & Order SVU episode. That brother was actually played by Spencer Treat Clark (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0004829/?ref_=ttfc_fc_cl_t9).

Both are good actors and I can see how you confused them. Clark looks a bit like a younger Dano (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0200452/?ref_=tt_cl_t6).

Yeah, one of the all time best happy endings. I love how the Menetti just goes out to Bridgeport on a whim, thinking he's just going to shut up the crazy lady... and the little boy opens the door. that cop caravan was great, and I also liked how they cleaned up the ending from the book and gave a somewhat harmless reason for kidnapping the boy (compared to what most people snatch children for, I mean).

reply

When I saw the ending and heard the reason the woman said the boy had been kidnapped, I got the impression from the looks of the detectives and police that they did not believe that and the woman then looked like she did not either. So I'm not so sure the ending was cleaned up from the book. I do not know how the book ends, though.

Yeah, maybe that was just for the audience's benefit, so we could tell ourselves that Alex hadn't been molested.

The book's ending is somewhat similar, in that Menetti has his son with him when he takes that unplanned trip to see Mrs. Robbins. But when he recovers Alex, there is no grouchy old bat sister there claiming that her brother got the kid to take care of her. There's just a creepy man wearing scrubs. And Menetti suspects he's drugged Alex, because the boy's eyes are kind of unfocused and vague. Alex also won't tell him if the man hurt him in any way.

I cry EVERY time I watch it...and I've seen it over two dozen times.

It is amazing how it still gets a lot of people who've seen it many times, me included. And without Kate Nelligan's performance, it would not have been nearly as emotional. Hirsch is great too.
Three lines really hit hard: Stockard Channing asks Nelligan something like, 'When are you gonna let this go?' and she replies 'When I can't stand it any more...when I can't stand it any more!'
Hirsch shows up at the abductor's house and asks where Hank is; when he gets no answer, he shouts 'WHERE IS HANK?'...incredible.
And of course the little boy on his way home in the police car asking, 'did I do something wrong?'
Great film I want on blu-ray
