Word for word remake

I love the original film, with Maragaret Lockwood in the principal part. Just saw the remake today on TCM and was very surprised that the script is virtually identical to the original. What was Michael Winner's (Diretor) motives by refilming it? And there is no passion from Dunnaway, no warmth.
