This Seems Lost on Some People…

But “Wargames” is really a derivative film in the vein of “Colossus: The Forbin Project” made early in the 1970’s. Which basically had the same plot but at the same time was kinda different. That film didn’t have to do with a kid hacking into a super Dept of Defense computer to play games but much everything else was like “Wargames” except that the movie had 2 supercomputers, one in the US & one in Russia (of course) & they threatened to wipe everyone out when communication between them was stopped by our respective countries.

All these years later I”ve never seen a article or interview where the makers of “Wargames” ever acknowledged that the film was influenced by “Colossus” & I could be wrong but I believe that it was. It’s weird how there isn’t a post in this forum where no one else mentions it. Oh well.

Colossus: The Forbin Project is a really good film. I recommend that you see it if you can.

Colossus may sound like a good movie, but I prefer the innocence of two videogame-playing teenagers who almost start World War 3. And WarGames IS an 80s movie, so videogames were very popular then, and this movie would thus be more accessible to the younger audiences that were its target, so they could be educated on the threat of nuclear war.

WarGames is certainly more friendly to audiences than horror fare like Threads, The Day After, or When the Wind Blows.

You had to be 15 to see it in the UK though . god knows why .
which excluded a some of the younger audience.

reply

Wow, I did not know that.

I'd never heard of it - but it's an interesting name choice given that Britain's WW2 Colossus computer was still a secret at that stage.

I think I've seen that movie. If I remember correctly, it was pompous, boring, dull, dry, bureaucratic and focused on how scary computers are / can be.

This movie is way more interesting and entertaining, even if it doesn't make a whole lot of sense.
