The gun scene in the nuclear bunker

Why would the guy pull a gun on his colleague who was refusing to turn the key to launch the missiles?
Did he just turn crazy? and would guns not be allowed in such a sensetive area?

There are some scenarious where you have to kill one of your own men, in fact you'll be court-martialed if you don't. My dad was USAF and he told me about a time when a Colonel crashed through teh guard gate and the guard yelled "Halt" and the Colonel didn't. The sergeant at the gate fired and it went through the window. The colonel backed up and demoted him on the spot. The sergeant apologized for shooting at him. The Colonel said, "that isn't for shooting at me that's for missing".

If not, he can be a janitor or something like that.

That won't work either, because eventually he would encounter a toilet so bad that he would be saying what he was in the movie: I can't, I'm sorry, I just .. can't.

That would make 3 Christmas' I've saved, vs. 8 that I've ruined; two were kind of a draw..

Captain Jerry Lawson: SAC? Try SAC on the HF.
1st Lieutenant Steve Phelps: That's not the correct procedure...
Captain Jerry Lawson: Screw the procedure, I want somebody on the goddamn phone before I kill 20 million people!
