If big budget horror and sci-fy movies used these kind of special effects I would probably watch more of them, oh why hollywood why, are they that cheap that cgi is more important?

The effects here were great for 1983 and they hold up well. I will not throw out CGI, however, as it works best as an aid to conventional effects. Take a look at Star Wars: The Force Awakens for example. Compared to the heavily CGI laden prequels it looks more authentic and it has made the prequels look somewhat dated.
