I hear this movie has some of the most natural dialogue when it comes to teens from the Valley in the 80's. Is that true? Their dialogue often sounds like a parody of some real jargon, but on the other hand, it does often "feel" very genuine. So, did kids really talk like this?

Of course, this is a movie and thus exaggerated. But girls, especially, spoke like that there.
I had a friend who was a "Valley Girl" and she could really turn that talk on. (I met her far from there.)
After I saw this movie, I had her take me to some of the locations featured in the move. As I remember, it seemed pretty much like the movie portrayed it.

shareThis is kind of off the original topic, but: after the Moon Unit Zappa song, there was a brief period were teen girls all over started talking like that. Kind of an odd reaction, I suppose.
shareYes, I lived in Orange County in the mid 70's and some of the Valley Girl speech patterns were already common then. When I moved to the Midwest a few years later, we did use some of the same slang but not the dramatic same speech inflection girls used in CA.
shareI am from Chicago, and recall as a HS kid some of my pals talking talking like that, wow memories! I never saw the film, but recall the song.
shareIn the director commentary, Coolidge says she had the whole cast go to the Valley and listen to real girls talk and learn how to imitate it, but then they really only did it full on for the first scene to establish the vibe. Then after that they toned it down to make sure audiences around the country could understand the dialogue. So it sounds like Valley girls were actually more extreme than what we see overall in this movie.
