Am I the only person who LIKES Kick the Can?

It’s undeniably schmaltzy, but I’ve never understood the hate for it. I think it’s a fine entry.

Me too. I think people just expected Spielberg to deliver the best segment and he didn't. But it's definitely not horrible. And it's also representative of only a handful of classic TTW eps that were feel good stories.

reply

It is my favorite, always was.

reply

I hated it because it had nothing to do with the rest of the movie.

Is there any way I can read the scriptment to the segment Spielberg was originally supposed to adapt for this movie?

From what I recall once hearing, the Spielberg segment currently in the film is not the one he was initially supposed to direct. It was changed after the Morrow incident due to the Spielberg segment initially involving a kid in the middle of the street with lots of special effects around him.

Am I wrong? Am I right? Someone tell me.

This is from the Trivia section:

Steven Spielberg briefly considered Rod Serling's The Twilight Zone: The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street (1960) about neighborhood paranoia that's set off by a force of invading aliens from the original Twilight Zone series as a potential segment which he canceled because it involved nighttime filming with children and special effects. This was mainly due to the tragedy that occurred on the "Time Out" segment. He finally chose "Kick the Can" from the original series.

Another story considered by Steven Spielberg for the film was one concerning a bully who has the tables turned on him during Halloween night, but problems with the story ensued, and it was eventually scrapped.

Thank you, sir.

I love kick the can! The thought of it keeps me young!!!!

reply

I didn't mind it, though I'm not sure if it's the cinematography that I like or the actual story.

Best segment in the film...and as we age, it becomes more and more relevant.

"Ok, I don't have any Halston dresses, idiot. It's not 1979!"

I saw this in theaters when it first came out (I was 13). At the time, I thought Kick the Can was kinda boring. I just re-watched TZ today as a 44 year old and Kick the Can made me cry. Yes, it was schmaltzy as you said, but I could really relate to it now. We age on the outside but inside, we still feel very young. I could understand the longing to go back in time and relive your youth. It was a sweet segment and relatable.

Just saw it for the first time yesterday and I thought it was adorable.

I really like it. It just feels totally out of place.
