I was wondering if the recent airing might be a herald or a trial balloon. This is wonderful news, I hope it goes up for pre-order soon! Just checked, Amazon doesn't have a listing yet.

reply

According to Warner Archives, we are getting BOTH CUTS! Excuse me while I throw my money at the person in charge.

OMG OMG OMG OMG!!!!

i absolutely NEVER thought we'd see this day.

ironically i was just looking at my laserdisc of TUaT last weekend.

I am beyond stoked that we will finally get an official release of this movie AND that it might contain both versions.

Woooo HOooooo!!!!!

Peace .n. THE BIG RED ONE!!

reply

Since we know that it will contain both main versions (apparently with Korty's approval, since he mentioned that both would be present), I really want to know if it will be presented in the original aspect ratio, and if it will have subtitles available (so I can sing along - I managed to get the song lyrics down thanks to the captioning on TCM's broadcast). Also, didn't the most complete "clean" version still omit a little footage and use some alternate footage (fade-out before Scuzzbopper calls Botch an a-hole, and some alternate footage in Botch's opening speech, which seems to have a different running time in both versions).

reply

FYI: i tweeted Warner Archives 'bout this amazing news. Tried to lock down a release date (and confirm its true). Didnt get a date but they replied crazy fast stating "spring" and they retweeted it...that bodes well for authentication of the story.

Wooo Hoooo! Scuzzbopper! Ibor! Figmen! Rod Rescueman! Ralph! Mum! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

Peace .n. The Spring!

reply

I've been Googling this every day in anticipation.

reply

I've been doing Amazon searches frequently to see if they have a listing, but nothing yet.

reply

I'm guessing it'll be around May or June, or perhaps July (at the latest) - TCM has it scheduled again for June 28th (June 27th according to "TCM time") at 2:00 a.m. EST. Summer starts sometime in June, so Warner could release it in June and still have it out during the spring, technically. No word as to which version Turner will air this time (as you may recall, their sole airing was a unique version).

reply

Has anyone heard any further news as to the release date (or anything else dealing with the release - bonus features [I think some MODs have included them], aspect ratio, etc.)?

reply

Tweeted Warner Archive about the aspect ratio question - this is the exchange:

Me: "Will the Twice Upon a Time DVD be widescreen or full screen? I've never been sure on the proper aspect ratio for the film."

WA: "Widescreen. We're still working on it..."

I have to say, this is just plain inspirational - I don't know what else to say. People have circulated crappy copies of the "dirty" version for thirty years, the VHS and LD have been out of print (and expensive) for who knows how many years, wasn't seen on TV since 1998, and now... holy crap. I pretty much had one chance in my life to see the movie (when I was five, and it came on Cartoon Network) before I lucked out and got a copy of the tape on eBay for a decent price (and found the HBO version on YouTube - it was taken down before I could finish it), and now everything's happening so fast... TCM, the DVD... this film is finally getting a little recognition. Maybe now it won't be the movie that time forgot.

reply

Alright! Sounds like the release is still planned, though it may be a bit later than we thought.

reply

"Spring" is pretty vague - I think summer begins in June, so technically they can release it in June and still have met their initial promise.

reply

thanks bunches @brandon-caplan for the update and info! I was thinking about tweeting Warner Archives this week for an update as the dvd hasnt showed up, even in preorder format, on their website yet.

Im thinking the same thing...the spring release will likely be pushed a little...buuuut their response to you gives me hope that they are still, indeed, planning on releasing it officially!!!!

Peace .n. The Rushers of Din

reply

Good news. Hope to see it soon.

reply

Update, update!

reply

YES YES YES! Thanks @brandon-caplan! I, like you im sure, have been regularly (read: almost daily) scouring the web and warner archive's website for some more news on the official release. Comicon makes total sense for an update and...fingers crossed....solid news on availability.

Cant Wait!!

Peace .n. The BIG RED ONE!

reply

After all these years .... fat, bald, greying, .... but .... FINALLY!

reply

While I am glad that it is coming out to dvd (and both versions will be released), but couldn't Warners just put it out on blu-ray, being that this IS 2015?

reply

totally agree with you but, as i understand it, the warner archives collection is targeting a lower budget way to release titles that probably wouldnt make alot of money (or actually loose money) via normal release channels (produce a bunch of blu rays and dvds and distribute through online stores and Brick and mortar stores). I havent actually ordered an archive collection disc but i seem to recall reading that the packing and disc itself were pretty bare bones. That also would explain why no blu....its alot easier and cheaper to make some dvds for the fans. My guess is that if sales were substantial that they would revisit a formal release. Would be wonderful to have on blu!

In the case of Twice Upon a Time, i think there's a devoted core group of we HUGE fans but otherwise 99% of the movie watching population have no idea what it is or that it even exists. Hopefully this release will help change that and a lot of new folks and kids will find and enjoy this wonderful movie.

Peace .n. The Spring!

PS: longshot hope: warner archives has been pretty tight lipped. a recent post showed that they will be unveiling this at ComicCon next week. Mayyyybe they'll announce that there will be a blu!? If not, hopefully someone asks the question and gets their thoughts on it!!

reply

All I know is that everytime I tried finding a copy of the film at a store or online, the response I got was "Oh, that movie with Molly Ringwald?"

At which point I shrugged and continued my search.

I still don't see it listed on Amazon.

reply

They've already said we won't be getting a Blu-ray version. At least the DVD will be widescreen, though.

reply

Okay, I just checked Warner Archive's Twitter feed (they just finished up their Comic-Con panel, it seems), and there is some good news (two words long) and some bad news (three words long). The bad news: the release has been changed to "later this year." The good news: COMMENTARY TRACK!!!!!

They also retweeted a photo that someone took of a clip shown at the panel. I can't definitively tell from the image (Rod and FGM) whether or not it's widescreen or full screen (although Warner Archive has said that the DVD will be widescreen).

But... COMMENTARY!!!!

reply

Yo Brandon! You rock! i, of course, have been eagerly awaiting any tidbits from todays panel. AHHHH! a commentary track!? thats awesome!! Im assuming and hoping its Korty. I completely didnt expect any extras so this is wonderful news.

Of course the delayed release is a tough pill to swallow buuuuuut its still gonna happen this year and is an official release so i'll try to be patient.

Thanks again dude!

Peace & Ibor, Skuzzbopper, Ralph, and Synonymous

reply

Okay, seems there will be dual audio tracks to accommodate both versions of the film.

reply

Don't get your hopes up. Usually when studios goof around for this long you can be sure it's vaporvideo by now. All signs point to some petty little legal snag that sensible people could solve in 5 minutes but will take lawyers 5 years to sort out - by which time WA will have certainly long gotten bored with the idea of releasing it. Or maybe they want to wait until they can take a loss-leader on their profits so they'll wait and wait for "just the right quarter" to release it.

It's never going to be released. Trust me.

reply

Well, it's airing again on TCM on November 1, I believe (it's listed as October 31 because it's scheduled before 6:00 a.m. on November 1). That seems like a pretty good sign - stop being such a Debbie Downer. This will be the THIRD airing of the movie this year - that's pretty good for a movie that had been out of official circulation since the late 1990s (counting the Cartoon Network airing).

I should also point out that TCM doesn't air a lot of animated movies - they're showing the Private SNAFU shorts (and other toons made for the military) in September, and Heavy Metal (which aired at least once before) will be on in October. That makes Twice Upon a Time getting three airings in a year even more unusual, I think.

reply

Well, here we are, September.

Still no DVD.

Oh well.

It would have been nice to see that film again.

reply

It's airing on TCM on November 1 (listed in their October schedule) - the third showing it will have had this year on the channel (quite a feat, considering TCM doesn't regularly show animated films).

Also, as of August 24th, Warner was still getting "final approvals" (for what aspect of the release, I have no idea).

https://twitter.com/WarnerArchive/status/635955715174043648

August 31st, someone else asked about it, and WA's Twitter again responded that the DVD is indeed coming.

https://twitter.com/WarnerArchive/status/638468044180746240

reply

Bah! Like I said, it's probably some petty licensing issue that will bog the whole thing down for years. We all know how the game works. It's either someone on the soundtrack wanting a huge payout, some executive fighting over pennies or one of the voice actors (or their estates) dragging their feet (or Lorenzo Music not wanting his picture released on DVD) with some other petty issue.

If you don't know how show biz works (or how it's dysfunctional), catch the excellent series taking a behind-the-scenes look at the comic book industry by SF Debris.

reply

As of yesterday (September 10), Warner Archive has said an announcement will be coming next week. Stop being so negative.

Don't you have anything better to do than troll this board and respond to every CONFIRMED update that I have found with negative speculation? Also, if they want to have it out before the end of the summer, they have until September 23 (which is the first day of fall).

reply

Welcome to The Internet, Brandon.

And welcome to Hollywood, too. In Tinseltown, nothing is "confirmed" until it actually happens. All you've confirmed is yes, there's some vague news to be announced at a vague time about the vague possibility of something happening. If you can't bear to have your hopes tempered with a bit of reality then I encourage you not to reply to me in this sub-thread.

reply

Well, okay ... I'll wait.

I guess the thing that gets me is that I really liked this film. I thought it was highly inventive and entertaining, yet when I read the genesis of the production, and how the production was handled, I now understand why there weren't more films like this.

And so it's like this is the only film of its kind, and it's like I had to wait until I was old and grey to see it again because of a director-producer battle over the content.

Whatever. It's too bad for fans of the film like me, you and others who posted here and elsewhere, that really good stuff always seems to get mired down in someone's disagreement about some aspect of whatever that thing is.

Such is life I suppose.

I mean heck, I graduated middle school, high school, college and university before this thing hit the VHS market, and even then I had to rely on my old Betamax copy for the version I saw on HBO.

And now there're more haggles over it.

You know, if I had gone back into the film industry, I might have tried to repeat the cult success with a film much like Twice Upon a Time. I thought it was that good, and deserved better than it got. But like I say, it seems like the really good stuff in life always gets sniped for some reason.

Sorry for the soapbox moment ... but I had to vent.

DVD dropping September 29! It's official (as of this afternoon)!

Interestingly, the Amazon link states "DVD-R Note: This product is manufactured on demand when ordered from Amazon.com." Is that the only way to get this new DVD?

I know who I am! I'm the dude playing a dude disguised as another dude!

reply

So apparently the answer is Yes, this is only being made available as a DVD-R. That's disappointing but oh well, I'm buying it anyway!

reply

I literally just found out about this (apparently, IMDB isn't sending me notifications again).

reply

AHHH! it appears that there are a few of you whom, somehow, were googling for a release date for this one MORE often than me. I was pretty much checking the WB store weekly. Thanks all for the wonderful news and update. I literally got goosebumps placing my pre-order just now!!

As for the comments about "dvd-r"...yea, its a weird business model, but the WB on demand system was created to find a way to, cheaply but officially, release dvds for less-demand titles. By all means i'd prefer an officially produced dvd (or..moreso..a multi-disc bluray release!!), i am pleased as punch to get ANY official release on dvd. especially if it includes the multiple versions.

My promise to this thread is that within 24hours of receipt...hopefully in the next week or so..i'll post a comprehensive review.

Peace & Chasing the spring with all the rushers of din

reply

Hey, at least they're releasing it. Plug it to everyone you know - it may become a really long-term sleeper hit and they'll go for a mondo-huge Blu-ray special edition.

So long as it's better quality than a VHS, I'll be happy with it.

reply

I'm afraid so. All MOD discs can be bought only on the internet.

reply

I don't mind buying it online, from Amazon or elsewhere. I was just hoping that it would be a "real" DVD, rather than MOD. But I've preordered it anyway. 👍

reply

It's the first release in the original aspect ratio, so that's pretty exciting - even the TCM broadcasts weren't widescreen, and TCM generally goes to great lengths to broadcast the original version of the movie (although there have been some anomalies - they showed the theatrical cut of 1941 on at least one occasion, instead of Spielberg's preferred cut, which is on DVD).

Better late than never. Just released today by Warner Bros. Classics (link above is for Amazon).

Whoot!

reply

It's not listed anywhere on the box, but the disc includes the trailer!

reply

Is it just me, or are there a few minor jumps/glitches in the video? I'm watching it right now, and it looks absolutely fantastic (PG dialogue intact!), but I'm a little concerned by one or two jumps that I've seen (one occurs just after the vultures bring back the figmen to Botch - it's a second or two after he says "now get me Greensleeve!"). I'm not sure if it's just my player, just my disc, or the transfer itself. The same Blu-ray player also displayed similar glitches with the Cowboy Bebop Blu-ray, but, when I watched on a cheap Blu-ray that I used in my dorm, the glitches did not seem to be present. So... is it just me, or does anyone else see it, too?

reply

ooooo brandon-caplan, you lucky son of a gun, i think you got your dvd one day earlier than mine, which i expect to arrive tomorrow. i'll check out the disc at the points you reference and let you know if there's issues at those points.

im soooo giddy!

reply

Thanks! I'm hoping it's just the BD player - still, the transfer looks pretty clean, I think even better than what aired on TCM earlier in the year.

reply

Howdy @brandon-caplan.....well i finally received my dvd! woot!! I havent had a chance to watch everything yet but i did check it at the point after Synonymous says "bring me greensleeves!!" and it didnt skip.

So excited to finally have an officially released TUaT on dvd!!

reply

Not so much a skip as a glitch in the video, rather. I'll try it on a different player, see if that makes a difference.
