Can I ask a stupid question?

Thanks in advance but,with no electricity at all. How the hell is the radio working for contact with anywhere else? I know nothing about ham radio but I wiki-d to see if there was an obvious reason but got nothing. Is it just for story or is there some reason this would be possible? Again, apologies if I'm missing some obvious reason
