Tender Mercies..I liked Crazyheart, but i thought i would enjoy it more.
shareTender Mercies by a mile! Nothing wrong with Crazy Heart as a film in its own right, but Tender Mercies had somthing more "Real" about it. It didn't seem like a Hollywood creation.
Signed, Me.
It's not even close in my eyes. Tender Mercies is a genuinely absorbing and layered character study that never once feels false. A lot of credit goes to Duvall for not playing a stereotypical recovering alcoholic. He never goes for the big moments, instead offering a low-key portrayal of a haunted man earnestly striving to achieve an inner harmony.
Crazy Heart is a generic bore, just going through the motions and relying totally on the strength of Bridge's performance (who is good, but not fantastic.) And Farrell was such a distraction.
...if that was off, I'd be whoopin' your ass up and down this street. ~ an irate Tarantino
I liked Tender Mercies, but not as much as Crazy Heart. Dunno why, though.
Maybe because I get a little bored with Duvall's low-key-ness.

I liked Crazy Heart and admired Jeff Bridge's performance and it has a better soundtrack, but there's no doubt in my mind that Tender Mercies is the more complete film. The main narrative is compelling but unfolds in a wonderfully, low key manner with terrific performances by the whole cast, not just Robert Duvall in his oscar - winning role. Tess Harper is a revelation. The direction, screenplay, and cinematography are all first class and combine to capture one man's resurrection from the depths of an alcoholic fueled despair, to a point where he realises he has developed a degree of psychological resilience in his life, sustained by a loving family.
shareYou are correct, spookyrat1, and my addition is that Crazy Heart is a good movie but Tender Mercies is a film. If you get the difference, you get it. If not, try to enjoy both for what each one is.
Cheers!
