Tar is a complex compound in itself

When Gus Gorman gets the Vulcan satellite to analyse Kryptonite in space and deduce its components, he finds that the satellite cannot understand one of its core elements, so he replaces the "unknown" element with "tar", but tar itself is a complex compound of other ingredients too, so no wonder the compound he ordered from the lab didn't work!
