I never even watched it as a kid. I saw all the others though. This one had a cover that just didn't look right. Superman carrying around some guy (didn't know who Richard Pryor was when I was a kid) and it just didn't look that interesting. I finally rented it when I was 17 and man, was it terrible. It's like someone just went, "Hey! Let's make the most off the comics Superman movie and throw in a famous comedian as a lead role! Give him as much screentime as Superman! Let's make the villains the kind of guys you'd see in a TV drama! Let's have Superman turning bad in a nonsensical way involving something that was shown to be deadly to him in other movies! Everyone will want to see that!" I can't believe Christopher Reeve even agreed to do this after the first 2 great movies. Even the 4th one with some of its bad writing is more entertaining than this!

Superman III is quite frankly the Batman & Robin of the Superman movie franchise (except that it would take one more movie to actually kill the Christopher Reeve Superman series). It basically takes a dump on everything that Superman is about and what he stands for the sake of a bunch of obnoxiously cheap jokes. Turning it into obstructively, a vehicle for Richard Pryor was just the tip of the iceberg.

Same here, which in retrospect is surprising. I definitely saw the original Superman in a theater when it was new. I remember going with my family, and my primary takeaway was that the opening credits seemed to last forever. I also remember the scandal the naked baby caused. I'm pretty sure I also saw the sequel when it hit theaters, but am certain I never watched the third one until years later, when I rented it in college. I don't know why we skipped that one, though it was the right decision for as crappy as the film is.

I loved it as a kid. I'm not sure your age, but when I was young, a big FX movie like this only came out a couple of times a year. I think seeing the impossible on the screen was enough to make it amazing & special. I've since rewatched it as an adult... pure shit.

It was a terrible film. Part IV was only marginally better.

reply

Anyone who thinks part IV was better than this is seriously deluded !!!

reply

I guess. I assumed it was but maybe I'll have to go back and see it again to reassess it.

reply

Anyone who thinks Superman 3 is better than Superman 4 is absolutely insane.

I LOVED this movie as a kid, and I still do now. It, together with Tron, got me into computers, and I loved the flawed Kryptonite compound turning Supes into a supervillain as well. But The Ultimate Computer at the end was the best, nothing beats Robert Vaughn using joysticks to fire missiles at Superman. And who could forget the mechanical zombie woman near the end? Also, Richard Pryor was a blast ("I don't want to go to jail because in jail there are robbers and rapists and rapists who rape robbers!")

OOF was this bad.

Really bad.

Batman and Robin level bad.

I agree!

While not the best Superman film I enjoyed it, I thought Annette O'Toole and Christopher Reeves gave great performances in the film, I could've done with less Richard Pryor though.

Overall I give Superman III a 7/10.
