Stroker is term for a back of the pack "field filler". A driver who just makes the races but rarely finishes any better than middle of the pack. Or if a driver has a big point lead late in the season and only needs to finish mid pack to keep his point lead over the other drivers, doesn't try to go for the win, but just finish the race safely, is said to be "stroking it".
Stroker = lengthening the stroke of an engine by way of the crankshaft or connecting rod. This in turn creates more cubic inches, thus, more power. That field filler thing is a new one on me and I've been racing for 30 years.
Im sure what happened was someone said at a race one time to a driver that was jawjackin' to some hottie - "Are you gonna stroke or race?" Bill heard it and thought hmmm.. stroke or race... stroke'r race.. Stroker Ace....
Also in some racing series of old they would start in reverse order,ie, fastest qualifiers to the rear, so drivers would slow down on qualifying to gain track position at the start. They were referred to as strokers, (not a term of endearment, I might add)

Nobody mentioned a Cartoon series that used to be in Hot Rod magazine (and others) called "Stroker Ace" which appeared way back in the Fifties.
