Strange Brew II

I just heard from a friend with some insider information that there will be a second film of bob and doug!

This is great news!

reply

Seriously??? What took them so long???

reply

God no! The first is such a classic why ruin it with a sequel?

reply

i agree... they're old now. if they maintained their beer drinking, they'd have huge bellies and red noses... and probably be suffering from major liver failure... that doesn't sound like a good movie.

reply

...Yeah its called "The king of Kensington"

Dave Thomas talked about it a few years ago and got me worked up, I guess, for nothing. His company Maple Palm was the driving force but couldn't find the funding. According to Mclean's they have just finnished a tribute special "Bob & Doug McKenzie's two-four anniversary" which will play on CBC in the fall.

funny how i just now noticed my typo of this posting...

i MEANT to type "This is great news?" instead of "This is great news!"

it kinda changes the message a bit.

i am not too thrilled with the news myself.

Dave Thomas wrote the sequel but Rick Moranis isn't interested in making it. So there will be no sequel. Unfortunately.

reply

What, Rick Moranis is too busy?
They should make this movie. It might suck, but it might not, and I don't see how it would ruin the first movie. The first movie will still be the same good movie.

reply

Well, he did Brother Bear and the commentary for it. Rutt & Tuke were obviously Bob & Doug, so why would he refuse to do a film?

reply

It took a while, but apparently the funding they needed to proceed has finally come through for them, at least as of today anyway (June 18, 2008). Things kinda fell apart a year ago, but -- all good things come to those who wait, I guess! Great news indeed. Looking forward to it!

The closest thing they did to a sequel was appearing together in that TV special earlier this year. Or was it last year? I think it was the Genie awards, or a special about SCTV, it was something about Canadians and TV. I forget what it was about exactly. Also had former Prime Minister Paul Martin in an Introduction.

I think the 2-4 special is probably the last you'll see of Bob and Doug as far as new material. From what I have seen in interviews and connected coverage, Rick Moranis is pretty serious about being in retirement and staying that way. It's a shame because I think Dave Thomas is a brilliant comedy writer and I have a feeling a new script would be on par with the original flick.

I suppose there's a possibility of it being handed to 2 younger comedians, but really, who the heck could play a 'new' Bob and Doug? Heh, it would be actually pretty funny if one of the guys was Shaun Majumder, the guy that plays Raj Binder on This Hour Has 22 Minutes. If Mike Meyers would come out of his hiding place you would actually have a pretty decent comedy duo. Won't happen, but I can imagine it would be fun.

If Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas can't do it, it shouldn't be done.

AGREED!!!!!

There's a bullet out there for everyone the trick is to die of old age before it finds you.

Besides, Strange Brew didn't just star those two, it was written by them as were all the McKenzie Bros stuff. They were those characters, they just did the sketches live without a script and what came out was what we saw.

Even if they replaced them as actors you'd just get whoever the hot young comics are playing them and it would be written by some hack and you'd end up with a movie like Starsky and Hutch or the Dukes of Hazzard.

I wish Moranis would come back but as others have said the guy is retired and they're both old. On the special Moranis was even telling people not to drink and drive, which is fine, but it ruins the old Bros image and vibe.

We'll always have Strange Brew, Great White North and the old SCTV stuff. I wish there was more but those are great.
