If they didn't have any beer money why didn't they just take back their empties?

How much are bottle deposits in Canada? It would probably take a few hundred bottles to get a six pack, so they could probably round up enough bottles for a few cases.

Probably, but remember that Doug himself criticized the movie of its "few minor story flaws," so they are covered by that.

An empty bottle in Canada is 10 cents, a case of 24 is $2.40 and there are several case laying around. They would even have enough money left over to buy a 6 pack for the ride home...which was done a lot back in in 1983.
