This isn't as bad as people might say...

it's WORSE. This movie might rank up there with Exorcist 2 for the worst sequel ever. Music blows. Frank Stallone BLOWS. Only redeeming value was the final scene, when he wants to "strut".

Maybe you can just stand there, and let him kick your ass...!

SA is one of my favorite movies.

LOL when you said, "It's worse." There is no end to this movie's ridiculousness. Only thing I have to disagree with is I met Frank Stallone and he's a really nice guy! :)

This movie is historically bad. I somehow got dragged to see this in the 80s. I could swear half the audience broke out laughing at various serious moments.

OP, why didn't you blame Sly Stallone for the writing and directing. IT's clear he was out of his element.

The dialogue was cringe worthy. Everything was on the nose - even that final strut comment. So terrible. Just really, really bad in every way.

I've read a few interviews with Stallone over the last several years where he said he had no business directing Staying Alive. At the time he was probably on a big ego trip where he thought he could take on anything. But I also read that Travolta pushed to get Stallone on board after he saw Rocky III because he wanted Staying Alive to have the same intensity.

In the first film Tony Manero is sort of a young thug who blows off steam every Saturday night dancing. He doesn't seem like the type who would want to go on to be a Broadway dancer though. Although Staying Alive is set about five or six years later and I guess Tony has changed in some ways.

But I have heard that the general storyline was always Tony trying to make it on Broadway although Stallone of course made some dramatic changes to the script. The only scene where it feels like a SNF sequel is when Tony briefly visits his mother.
