Special Effects - how the hell??


I've watched the scene where Mel get's an arrow through his through several times to try and work out how they did it and it's seamless. If it was CG I'd be impressed but this was 1983 so must have been a practical effect - it blows my mind.

See those two areas I circled around? Inside the big one, you can see they attached a wire to his neck. On the smaller one, you can see the head of the arrow sticking out of his back.

Basically, they just slid the arrow through the wire and pulled the arrow head behind his neck up at the same time.

Still alot more effective than the vast majority of CGI done in movies nowadays. Sometimes simpler is better.

Agreed, and it looks more convincing than the harpoon gun death in Friday the 13th Part III.

Yep. That's why practical effects (when done well) are still better than cgi
