Her face in the end

WTF?? She just held that face even though you can see her tongue move to swallow. Creepy.

What did you do, Ray?

reply

According to the cast and crew face was actually a mask worn by the male body double.

Yeah, but only for the full body shots. The close up is real.

Good to know. But why, I wonder? Why that face? It was so weird.

It took me a few times after first seeing the movie before I was able to watch that part without looking away (which only helps so much because there's still that creepy voice...). Same thing happened to me with Large Marge in PeeWee's Big Adventure.

I thought the face she did at the end ruined everything that came before it. Granted, this was no masterpiece, but it was decently building up to the climactic finish and then...that stupid face...
Lame.

reply

I think many will disagree with you...

I really like your car Mrs. Larusso!

reply

Yeah MOST people think the face is terrifying
Not "lame"

reply

It was a mask, duh.

Halloween is coming, dare ye listen?

reply

Not so sure it was a mask. And even if it was, it looked ridiculous.

reply

The close ups shots are her real face. Every other shot is a mask on a guy.

reply

Okay, fair enough. The close-up shots are what I found to be ridiculous: http://cdn.bloody-disgusting.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/Sleepaway_ Camp_Ending_10_21_12.jpg
Stupid, stupid, stupid face.....

reply

What would have worked for you, in your opinion?
I love the expression and the accompanying noise.

We've met before, haven't we?

reply

Body looked better than the face.

"Feel like yodelin in the canyon?"

reply

It's jarring but the more I looked at it, the creepier it got. Even though it's obviously a mask on the male body, I think that might make it even scarier. Something about it is so obviously off which makes it scarier I think.

Ok, I must say that I watched this recently by myself in the dark, in my basement. I'm not one to get scared easily and I love slashers. Slashers never scared me, I mean the first Freddy film has some creepy parts but I can still watch it alone in the dark. Slashers are just not scary...awesome, yes, but more action than horror.

Let me tell you, when that face came on at the end, I almost bleeped bricks. It came out of left field and punched me in the face. I was frozen for a little bit, not really taking it in. I couldn't believe how scared I was. When the credits rolled, I ran up the stairs, turning on every light along the way. I have no idea why I reacted this way, but that part scared the Jesus out of me. I wasn't able to sleep that night. Every time I closed my eyes I saw that face...like it was watching me. Oh yeah...and I'm 22 years old. Like I said, I watch a lot of scary movies in the dark, but the psychological aspect of this film scared the pants off me.

I understand you. I felt the same

I first saw Sleepaway Camp when I was, hmmm, maybe 12 or 13. This was back in the '80s, so I rented the VHS from a mom and pop video store and was casually watching it home alone that evening while my parents were away.

The ending hit and, the best way to describe it was like I was being attacked by the movie itself. It was so wild and unexpected, that I was literally frozen in place. I remember not even wanting to see the ending again, rewinding the tape and quickly putting it back in the rental case.

Yeah, I had nightmares later on that night, always seeing that face.

I think the crazed face, mixed with those growling animalesque noises, coupled with the shocking revelation of this sweet girl not quite being who you (wanted) expected her to be is what makes it so unsettling.

reply

Mask or no Mask that expression and bizarre howling sound Angela made had me cowering in fear. Then after I felt brave enough ran to turn on all the lights in my house.

reply

Really enjoyed this film. The "She's a boy!" comment, coupled with the mad face and howling made it such a cool ending!

The look on "his" face and the cackling was pretty creepy, but the movie didn't allow you to get inside the character's feelings, so it didn't matter. A better look at the abuse he suffered would have brought things into better clarity.

reply

If they'd shown the abuse he'd suffered as a child, then it would've ruined the payoff at the end. The look and the raspy growling was Angela becoming Peter again. He's using his real voice and letting himself be seen as his natural self for the first time in a long while.

Even though I knew the ending because I'd seen one of those funny review shows about it (Zac Romero's B-Roll on B-Movie TV), that face still scared me, and I didn't want to go to sleep. (Middle of the night alone in my room when I saw the ending)

I mean, I've been watching all kinds of 70's and 80's Italian slasher/supernatural films, witch burning, human sacrifices where they drink the blood, hairless cats eating dead bodies, Paranormal Activity and The Conjuring and Annabelle, Oculus, The Ring... but I think the final shot of Sleepaway Camp scared me the most.

Well, I confess that I wouldn't look in the mirror to brush my teeth after watching Oculus that night. And Two Evil Eyes might've bothered me if I'd watched it at night in my own cat-filled house.

There is no objective reality... and that's Sucker Punch
