Final scene wouldn't have been as effective without THE SOUND

Most of us figured out the twist ending far ahead of the reveal, but it's that horrible, guttural noise that Angela makes that really sells the moment and makes it completely unforgettable.

It shows that she's an animal, possessed by some evil force that has warped her mind, and the sympathetic exterior is just a fly trap.

I haven't seen this film but had heard so much about the ending, that I looked up a photo from that scene and thought: 'that's a creepy expression but I don't see what all the fuss is about-I must be cooler than I realised(!)'.
Then I watched a Top 10 Twist Endings video on YouTube a few months later (-having forgotten about this) & assumed that they'd show endings from modern or 'classic' films, only to get stunned by Sleepaway Camp popping up!
The sound REALLY makes the difference- I'm shuddering just thinking about it...

That weird noise she made was very unnerving and unsettling. It really intensified that shocking and surreal ending. Say what you will about the movie as a whole but they did a damn good job in creating such a horrifying scene.

he/she/it reminded me of a caveman

Yea the animal sounds coming out of his/her mouth was disturbing, but the score was also chilling and original. I remember when I first saw this movie on VHS back in 1989 with my mom and brother we all guessed it was Angela doing the killing, but of course, that wasn't the movie's surprise; something no one actually saw coming. That makes this movie special.

LOL, don't forget the random cut to infrared or whatever that green effect was.

reply

Yeah, freezes to that burnt frame which you have stare at during the credits makes the effect better.

I agree with you two. I’ve seen the film many times and it really is the combination of the animal noise and that weird freeze frame. I saw a documentary that shows the lady who plays Angela, can’t remember her name, at a horror convention tacking pictures in that pose. 😄

Felissa Rose

That’s her! Just judging from the documentary, she seems really nice.

Before Covid hit a friend of mine was organizing a horror con for my city and she was the first "celeb" on board. He said she was really nice, and seemed eager to do it.

I go to a horror convention in Chicago every year and she is always there. Very cool and approachable.

What does it matter if she's a dude? It's just "shock" for the sake of shock. It has zero to do with why she/he's a killer.
