Silkwood is one of the best films of Mike Nichols.

Silkwood is a very very extraordinary film. All actors done great.
Meryl Streep deserves an Oscar for this film.

I totally agree. This was an excellent film and contains one of my favorite Meryl Streep performances. She made the character of Karen Silkwood very real and made every moment in the film believable. You never see Streep "acting" in this film. She simply brings an ordinary character vividly to life, and I'm sure it has a lot to do with the direction of Mike Nichols, a real "actor's director" who knows how to get the most out of his actors.

"Silkwood is one of the best films of Mike Nichols." Really? Okay I won't be watching any more of his films then.

reply

why not, idiot.

you are so right...silkwood is pure cinematic genius. I'm not a big mike nichols fan, but this movie is brilliant--and the acting by the the three leads is spectacular!

Its very slow paced though, I kept getting bored. Didnt thing much of Kurt Russel, why did he leave the plant, it wasnt even discussed. Interesting relationship between Streep and Cher, but so much bickering about household trivia, who last swept the floor etc didnt further the plot. The authorities seemed to show no interest in this at all, you would have thought they would have been investigating leaks and contamination. If they werent, shouldnt the unions have been complaining about it. If the gloves had holes in them wouldnt they be checking the gloves?

You have to remember, the events this film dramatizes took place in the early 1970's. Workers didn't want to rock the boat & risk their jobs over safety concerns. It sounds unbelievable today, but back then, that's the way it was. That's why her own co-workers shunned Karen.
As for the pacing, it couldn't be much different that the way it was done. In real life, Karen Silkwood wasn't a super hero running around to save the day. She had to sneak & spy. There is no way to depict it better. As for the characters & relationships, Kurt Russel leaving the plant wasn't discussed directly, but he had brought over a friend (when Karen was sweeping the floor & Dolly was cleaning the weed) & he was mentioning opening his own garage, which he did. The relationships may not have furthered the immediate plot of the nuclear plant issues, but the movie was about Karen & her relationships so it makes sense to have character development & understand that Dolly was in love with Karen & had to deal with the fact that she could only be friends with her when she wanted so much more. That was an important part of the movie (albeit made up since there never was a Dolly........she's a composite of a few real life friends/acquaintances & the real roommate Karen had)
I read a book about Karen Silkwood before this movie was even made (I was around 15 when I read it & am 39 now) so I think I really was able to get into the movie because of the book. Give it a read. It's called The Killing Of Karen Silkwood by Richard Rashke (I think that's his name). The woman was & is underappreciated for what she did with bringing attention to nuclear plant safety (remember, Three Mile Island happend a few years after her death) and worker safety issues. A lot of things that we take for granted today, were pushed to the forefront by Karen. RIP

Totally agree. Silkwood is a magnificent movie and Mike Nichols is one of my favourite directors of all time. Meryl Streep is not too technical or actressy here at all - this is probably her rawest, deepest and most natural performance, and she is sensational. Kurt Russell and Cher also excellent.

i loved the scenes between Meryl Streep and Kurt Russell, i thought they managed to portray real intimacy without resorting to tacky sex scenes. When they are laughing in bed because dolly is "getting some" its just priceless.

I loved the casual, unforced intimacy between Meryl and Kurt too. You really felt they had an emotional history and background together.

Silkwood' is my favourite film of 1983 and my choice for Best Picture Of The Year - no slight on'Terms Of Endearment' - but this is much more real and natural.

Meryl Streep should have won Best Actress Oscar and Cher and Kurt Russell for Best Supporting roles. This is also Mike Nichols Best Film as far as I'm concerned and he should have won his 2nd Best Director Oscar.

Agreed! Superb film overall.

I agree this is a fantastic film and Meryl should have won. Also, this is much better than Heartburn, another film by Nichols and starring Meryl. My favorite Mike Nichols films are this, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolfe, and Closer...but I haven't seen them all of course.

Watched this tonight after last seeing it in the cinema 30 years ago. A very good film indeed and Streep is outstanding!

reply

Couldn't agree more. I wish it'd been nominated for Best Picture.

If there is a minor flaw in the film, it could have done with some tighter editing. Although the film is slow, I never find it boring and it is a film of moments and observation. You could say, that what was left in was relevant to the characterization; but I would have cut short on some of the bedrooms scenes, between Karen and Drew. I think there is a bit too much exposition between them, especially after Karen has been scrubbed down for the first time. The film needed to get on with the story.
