Inspector Layton = Lestrade

It's quite obvious that the Scotland Yard inspector was called Lestrade when the movie was filmed, but the name "Layton" was later clumsily overdubbed, for some reason. I can't imagine why the most well known Yard inspector in the Sherlock Holmes stories would be renamed after the fact.

I wonder if it had anything to do with the rights issue that ended up with their having to scrap any of the other films in the series that had been planned.

Yeah it was weird, but I guess the question of having the rights to use it would be the most probable explanation.
