Acurate.

Very acurate film in my opinion. Gregory Peck does a great job as the tough priest. The Pope is most likely a good analsis of his character. The young couple though fictional still struck a chord in their struggle admidst the Nazi Ways.

Likewise.

Any chance to get it on DVD for region 2?

reply

I bet you could find it on DVD. I just watched it for the first time, last week, but it was on VHS.

I adore it! I was a little girl when I first saw it, and when I went to Rome, I walked on that white line that separates Piazza San Pietro from the rest of the city and I thought I could still se the Germans on the other side ...

reply

The white line is still there?
I loved the scene in the movie as the Priest "tightrope walked" the white line to upset the Nazi's who were hoping that he'd step over the line so they could arrest him or whatever. The movie is great!

In Rome everything is still there!!!

I'm not sure, but if, by "the young couple," you are referring to the Allied Air Crewman who married "Franceska's" daughter, the relationship is grounded in a true story. In J. P. Gallalgher's book, a picture is shown of the "Maltese heroine" (Franceska in the movie identifies herself as from Malta), whose real name is Mrs. Henrietta Chevalier. A picture with the wedding party, including Chevalier's daughter Gemma and her husband (Corporal Kenneth Sands) is in the book. The picture was taken right after Mgr. O'Flaherty had performed their wedding ceremony.
