Does anyone know what the eight crystals say??

I love this movie, owned the original beta video taped version :-)), but have always wanted to know what the eight crystals say on them. Obviously they are in kanji, the only one I can glean through the english translated film is Shinbei's crystal which means "a kind heart". I would love to know the what others mean. Please can anyone help an old fan?? Cheers.

I don't have the specific kanji translations, but they are meant to reference the virtues from Confucius: Brotherly Affection, Filial Piety, Faith, Loyalty, Wisdom, Proper Form, Duty, Sympathy.

Here's how I worked it out, although I don't read the language.

Chapter 4. CRYSTAL 1 chu=loyalty =Dosetsu
CRYSTAL 2 rei=proper form =Daikaku

Chapter 5. CRYSTAL 3 ko=filial piety =Shino
CRYSTAL 4 chi=wisdom =Keno

Chapter 6. Four CRYSTALS same as above

Chapter 8. CRYSTAL 5 shin=faith =Genpachi

Chapter 9. CRYSTAL 6 gi=duty =Sosuke
CRYSTAL 7 tei=brotherhood =Kobungo

Chapter 11. CRYSTAL 8 jin=sympanthy =Shinbei

“A kind heart,” says princess.

After working through the various wikipedia articles about Confucianism (comments about the virtues from Turnbull's book "The Samurai and the Sacred"), I've got the following list:

Confucian virtues ordered by importance:
1. Jin=Ren - Humaneness, Benevolence (virtue of the feudal lord, principle of the Japanese crown jewel sword) - Shinbei

2. Gi=Yi - Justice, Righteousness - Sosuke

3. Shin=Xin - Integrity, Faith - Genpachi

4. Chi=Zhi - Wisdom, Knowledge (principle of the Japanese crown jewel mirror) - Keno

[5. Continence, Temperance, Austerity; not used in the film]

6. Chu=Zhong - Loyalty (virtue of the feudal retainer) - Dosetsu

7. Ko=Xiao - Filial Piety - Shino

8. Rei=Li - Proper Form, Propriety, Etiquette - Daikaku

9. Tei - Brotherly Affection - Kobungo
(Maybe the author Kyokutei Bakin of the novel "Nanso Satomi Hakkenden" used already this Kanji instead of that for Temperance.)

This list shows good agreement with the list presented in the wikipedia article about the anime series "The Hakkenden" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hakkenden#The_Hakkenshi
