Read the book!

I saw the movie years ago, and wasn't overwhelmed. Maybe I'd like it more if I saw it now. But I'm a third through the novel, and it is absolutely terrific. It's like a cross between Thomas Mann (it reminds me a lot of "Buddenbrooks") and Jane Austen, with a little Emile Zola thrown in.

I am in no means an expert, but I have read a couple of Japanese novels and seen a handful of movies. I think you're opinion is more a cultural difference. Many non-Americans consider our current movies/television/literature ADD although they use different phrases. In many aspects, they are right. How do you feel about early American movies?
