Why is this movie great?

Tell me what you think. I don't dislike the movie per se but I don't think it is great, from the deadpan acting, disagreeable cinematography, annoying scenes and dialogue, all of which distract the viewer from its themes, to the characters themselves which are not really likable. Besides Rourke getting gunned down there are few moments the movie makes me feel anything.

For those who think this movie is great please say something meaningful and intelligent about it so people who disagree with you may understand why this is a worthwhile movie.

Tits, ho-ha!!

Every single shot it the film by Coppala is amazing. Beautiful looking black and white film from start to finish. dark alleys, brick walls, thick smoke. Atmosphere is brilliant in this movie.

I guess I'm more interested in the story, screenwriting, and acting aspects of the film. As I said, I found much of the film disagreeable and annoying. I didn't find great deeper meaning in the story. I realize it was a low-budget film but it could have been executed better.

It wasn't low-budget in the least. It cost $10 million when it was made in 1982, which was a respectable budget back then.

I agree about this not being such a great film. It has good actors really hitting it out of the park, but the story starts strong, and then gets to be scattered nonsense. Both Micky Rourke and Matt Dillion start as relatively cool characters, but mid way through Matt becomes so dumb that I was expecting him to start drooling, and Micky becomes a fool with so much pain for who knows what really that he self destructs.

I never read the book so maybe all that wod make more sense if I did, but I found it not all that great....Interesting, but not great

If there was a award for the worse names given to characters....Hinton would have aced it for a couple years for sure

I just now tried watching it. The dialogue and acting sucked. I couldn't make it past Rusty James'(OMFG could they say that name even more than they did?)fight with Biff. Just terrible.

It was meant to be an art film for teenagers. Probably being outside that group lessens the appeal.
