Uneven and Dated

I won't say that I didn't get more than a few chuckles from this. I was just astonished at how much of this filmed show was not funny. I think the audience members were reacting more to the energy that was in the atmosphere more than anything else. I wish Richard Pryor had done more acting roles because he was definitely more talented as an actor. He will be missed!

I completely disagree.

I think this is a solid performance and may be his best all around stand up even though Live in Concert was the funniest. You also have realize unlike his other 2 standups this also contained a bit of dramatic truth to it. Since he was mature at this point in his life, he sort of brought a more calculated/mature approach to this stand up unlike the other two.

Of cource some things are going to be dated just as a stand up special made now would be dated 30 years from now.

Also, this is definately not dated in a lot of ways the things he talks about are still relevant today (such as his take on prejudice, American with little countries, disrespectful kid in Mudbone, etc).

He was a good actor BUT a great comedian. Stand up comedy is forever embedded with Pryor.

Richard Pryor was a comedian first an actor second

Additionally, the shoddy treatment of African-Americans by police is as timely a topic in 2014 as it was in 1983.

I fully agree.

I think Richard Pryor was delightful in his film roles, but I just find his standup comedy tedious. It's not so much that I find his material dated – jokes about diarrhea during sex and shooting up heroin in the buttocks are timeless – it's just that I think the "edginess" and shock value of the material substitute for genuine humor and insight. The audience here is clearly having a good time, but they appear to be reacting to the spectacle and, frankly, trying to change the subject rather than laughing at the jokes. When a joke falls flat, which was often here, he just talks about his penis or drops an f-bomb, and the audience reacts to that.

I suspect you and I are outnumbered, but I have seen most of Richard Pryor's feature and standup films, and the standup films just don't hold up. Of course, the same is true for many concert films, comedy as well as much. Guess you had to be there, but I don't regret that I wasn't in this case.

You are clueless, Warped..and I am not being insulting. He was being utterly honest and your 21st Century sensibilities just cant handle it.

reply

Thank you for not insulting me, bartf-4, but honestly, diarrhea during sex has never been part of my reality.

Hmmm...

It's been a while since I last saw this movie. I'll look around the Internet and see if it is available to watch again.

To be fair, I had been working through a list of eighties movies and had often become impatient while watching this movies. Now that I've achieved my goal (520 eighties movie titles never seen before by me) I'm much more open to going back over them and giving these movies a fair hearing.

I watched all four stand-up shows, and I noticed this one is somehow different, but I don't know what it is. Topics are mostly the same. Found it irritating, that the crowd was yelling stuff at Rich all the time. At one point I thought this show is different because he is sober. Don't know if there's anything to it. What do you think?

Maybe 1 or 2 comments. And it better be something that will complement the show. After that, I guarantee your ass Will be silenced.
