What if a movie came out that tried to soften the character of Freddy Krueger ...

like they did with Vader in "Jedi"? Would people accept that?

reply

Nobody knew about Vaders past until the Prequels came out.

I loved the OT
But Vader getting soft and going all good guy at the end always bothered me too
Great villains like Vader or Freddy are too cool to waste on some redemptive arc nonsense

Watching Vader in his villainous prime in "Rogue One," coupled with the whiny, self-entitled brat he was in the prequels, makes one buy the "he was seduced by the Dark Side" excuse less and less.

And if Vader's getting his redemption how about The Emperor? Surely good resides in him as it did in Vader? Or how about Boba Fett? Or Jabba? Where are their blue spirits at the Ewok kegger? Or how about every stormtrooper? Weren't they just following Vader's orders? Don't they deserve redemption too? Or, are we just reserving redemption for mass murderers like Vader?

It's true, Vader was infinitely more effective as a monumentally badass villain than as the man underneath.

I've never been a huge fan of ROTJ and was never really gripped by the final three-way confrontation, but the prequels made a bad moment infinitely worse. I mean they had Vader as this complete idiot who gets tricked into joining the Dark Side, and doesn't catch on and change his mind for twenty freakin' YEARS??? It doesn't make any sense, if you look at Lucas's story as a whole, but that's Lucas for you. Created the single most awesome screen villain of all time, and did his best to ruin his appeal with a nonsensical backstory... but didn't quite succeed. Because Vader is and always will be AWESOME.

But they did that ! Haven't you seen "Freddy's dead : the final nightmare" ? Freddy was a comedian in that one. And yes, it sucked.

If Vader had remained a henchman throughout the trilogy I'd of loved to see him remain badass and evil but he was turned into Anakin and got rewarded with an undeserved redemption, whilst Luke got rewarded with nothing.

In one way sure it had its issues, on the other it works. The Emperor was there you didn't need Darth Vader to carry the sword of evil to the end of the film. Instead of dying outright, he was given an opportunity few villains get. A sort of redemption. He was not forgiven for everything by everyone. But he didn't die the angry hateful man he became. I think for the time it worked well, it still works well. Compared to PT and the current trilogy. Anakin and especially Kylo have baby fits hard to watch on screen, their internal conflicts undercutting their characters. Anakin was easily moved by his emotions and lacked self control, Darth Sidious fed on that and manipulated him from once he was discovered. A little better writing and acting and I think it would have worked better than it did. Kylo is a little tougher, he seems just like the kid that likes to play the bad guy so he does things to convince people he is a monster that he keeps repeating he is. He remains unconvincing all the way to the end of TLJ. I am somewhat fascinated how they will handle that in part 9.

Few people would care if they made such a movie about Freddy Krueger, they'd just say the movie sucks and move on... Horror movie fans don't take their appreciation for these movies as seriously as the StarWars fanatics...

it wouldn't be such an existential crisis...

Freddy is a supernatural being who enters peoples' dreams. Since he is already dead and has become this supernatural being there is no redemption for him. I guarantee that if you were to enter his dream world and show him kindness he would just laugh and murder you. Heck a guy in Part 2 did just that (though Freddy was in the real world at the time) and was immediately killed by him.
