People complain about CGI, but...

...the optical effects sure look bad nowadays. It's like they're literally standing in front of vaudville stage backdrops. The morning news' weatherman's greenscreening is better than in the speederbike chase.

The only effect I'm not fond of is when Lando and Han say their goodbyes to each other in an area that is obviously a bluescreen background. The "she won't get a scratch" scene.

The irony is that they actually had a Millennium Falcon prop for ROTJ. As it turned out it was used in a scene that never even made the movie, so it was a complete waste of money.

it was the same prop as the one in Empire Strikes Back. they hermetically sealed it in storage until ROTJ could be filmed. I've seen photos of the remains of the Falcon in the trash pile in the backlot. a real sad sight.

Why would they do that when they can sell it to a Star Wars fan for tens if not hundreds of thousands of dollars?

I don't think the 'prop' industry was as big back then as it is now, what the internet and all, your market is literally world-wide. Most movie props were either reused in other films or sold for scrap.

Sheesh... Those were definitely the days.

The effects may be a bit dated, but anything beats the over-saturation of CGI that Lucas shoehorned into the prequels. Especially Attack of the Clones.

This movie has the best visual effects ever, and also the worst.

The space battle, and the death star and Endor matte paintings are some of the best effects ever in a movie. But then you have that weird matte painting in the hangar, the Rancor bluescreen effect that looks like crap, ...

The Empire Strikes Back on the other hand has a 100% consistent fantastic look. Looks good to this day. An example of a movie that hasn't aged at all.

I'm just on my way up to Clavius.

nowadays

A lot of CGI looks bad nowadays, too, even when it's brand new.
