How did they film the shovel scene?

The scene where Norman whacks his real mom over the head is pretty convincing. It's no stunt woman, totally the real actress. The shovel looks like it's made of something hard, not foam or anything. When it hits her she looks like her head really snaps forward. Just wondering if anyone has some theories about how they filmed it to look so real?
